Replying to @KimZetter
I think it was pretty obvious that “ethical promises” of this kind are impossible to keep, not only technically, but also because of the institutional weight of the parties involved. It’s just marketing…

Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu is finally free! After more than three years of persecution and deprivation of liberty in Azerbaijan, Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu is free and safely in Germany, where he is receiving medical care. His case had drawn sustained international concern, including over his health and restrictions preventing him from seeking treatment abroad. For the WLC family, this moment is especially meaningful. His daughter, Zhala Bayramova, a former WLC Leadership Council member, never stopped fighting for her father’s freedom. Zhala also took part in #FreeThem, an initiative of WLC’s Political Prisoners Support Team, helping amplify the voices and stories of political prisoners and their families. Today, we celebrate with Zhala and her family—and with everyone who stood beside them throughout this long fight. This is why we keep speaking out. This is why we keep fighting for every political prisoner. Until they are all free.

NEW from @AntoanetaRoussi Hacking company Oxygen Forensics sold its services to European law enforcement. Last week, US DOJ arrested its top executives for concealing ties to Russia. Every government using these tools has to severe ties & conduct full investigation!

NEW: Israeli mercenary spyware company Paragon is going public. Remember their 'ethical' Graphite spyware? That WhatsApp caught targeting journalists & activists in Italy & we forensically confirmed? Now, Paragon vows global expansion. I predict trouble. Public markets demand growth, but the total pool of potential mercenary spyware customers that (a) won't abuse the tool and/or (b) are disciplined enough to never get caught is finite. Proof: NSO, Candiru, QuaDream, Intellexa... all had exactly this problem. All got burned. Can Paragon be the exception to the laws of spyware physics? Their whole pitch was that they sold to a very select group of democracies. Well, Italy was a democracy and abuses followed. Paragon already has a messy abuse scandal... I think something will give. 1/ Story: calcalistech.com/ctechnews/a…

We commend the U.S. Department of Justice for arresting the leadership of Oxygen, a digital forensics company accused of concealing its ties to Russia in sales to the U.S. government. Inside Russia, the same technology has been used to facilitate digital surveillance, enabling the collection of data from people’s devices that can then be used by the Kremlin to target and punish Russians for speaking out against the regime.

The US government has been buying "American made" phone-cracking tech for years. There's a catch, it is secretly 🇷🇺Russian. Dissidents have been warning about Oxygen Forensics years, journalists have poked at the company and finally... their American CEO was just arrested by the @TheJusticeDept for wire fraud Great thread by @natynettle who has been working closely on this issue 👇
