Not so early-career docs - If you haven't already, you've got to listen to this one. A lot of heart in this one.
⌛ Beyond the Basics: How Mid-Career Physicians Can Use Wealth to Buy Time & Live More Now You've saved diligently for years. So why does cutting back still feel so risky? Many physicians hit mid-career with a solid portfolio and the same quiet question: "Can I ease up without wrecking retirement?" On the latest Physician Cents episode, we dug into Coast FIRE, the point where your existing investments could grow toward your retirement goal on their own. Here's what stood out: 1️⃣ Coast FIRE changes what you need to save, not what you need to earn. Your paycheck still has to cover today's life, and spending the portfolio to replace lost income changes the math entirely. 2️⃣ Stress-test before you sign anything. Run the plan with lower returns, higher spending, and a later retirement date. Then get the FTE details in writing, because 0.8 FTE doesn't always mean 20% less work once call, inbox, and benefits are factored in. 3️⃣ Account mix matters as much as your balance. A big 401(k) isn't usable cash before 59½. Lower-income part-time years may also open a window for Roth conversions, as long as you plan the tax bill first. The bigger point? Financial independence isn't just about retiring early. It's about having more choice now: fewer nights, school pickups, or a hobby you've put off since residency. We broke it all down in our new blog post and full episode. Links in the comments. 👇 Full post & episode: physiciancents.com/post/how-… And if you're part of the Physician Cents community, we'd love to hear from you: what would you do with one more free afternoon each week? #Physicians #FinancialIndependence #CoastFIRE #PhysicianFinance #Burnout

Pursuing financial independence often makes more sense than trying to retire early One gives you options The other asks what you're willing to give up to get there faster This week's episode of Physician Cents gets into it Listen on Apple or Spotify

Umm... Is it common for residents to "share" their moonlighting hours with co-residents and then have to pay money out to them because their co-residents don't have a direct agreement with the institution?

Many doctors have missed out on lots of life. They may tend to want to "live for today" b/c tomorrow is not promised. At the same time, living into old age is extremely likely. Balance is very very important. Living one's elder years with limited financial autonomy is rough.

💸 Why Physicians Can Feel Broke on a $500,000 Income (And How to Fix It) Ever look at your bank account near the end of the month and think, "I make great money — where did it all go?" You're not imagining it. On our latest Physician Cents episode, we broke down a real physician household earning $500,000 a year — and by the time taxes, student loans, housing, and transportation are accounted for, more than $225,000 is spoken for before groceries, childcare, or a single vacation. That's not a spending problem. It's a cash-flow problem hiding behind a big number on your W-2. A few things we dug into: → Lifestyle inflation rarely looks reckless. It looks like a bigger house, a reliable car, and takeout after a brutal call shift — reasonable choices, made repeatedly, that quietly eat your margin. → A "full" budget isn't a failing budget. If your dollars are funding retirement, debt payoff, and your kids' 529s before you spend on anything else, that fullness is progress — not a red flag. → Automating your retirement, savings, and sinking funds does more for your financial health than any amount of willpower ever will. The goal was never to build the biggest account balance possible. It's to build a plan where every dollar has a job — so you can spend freely on what actually matters to your family, guilt-free. 🎧 A $500K income doesn't guarantee cash flow. See why physician households feel stretched thin — and how to build a budget that funds your future first. Full episode is live now — physiciancents.com/post/why-… And if you're not already part of the Physician Cents community, come join us — we're building this one honest conversation at a time. 🩺💰 #PhysicianFinance #PhysicianCents #PersonalFinance #LifestyleInflation #DoctorsAndMoney

Insurance-selling advisors can be a funny bunch. They earn significant comp on the sales of insurance policies and then get confused when doctors don't want to entrust them with their financial planning advice needs? A clear separation b/w fees and product advice is crucial.

I know the saying "doctors are bad with money" hasn't died yet. But it's on its way. I see more and more doctors taking ownership of their financial education and money decisions. It's awesome!
