The police don’t intervene because politicians are terrified that if they do one of the youths will end up dead, which they fear would make things worse, so the government is giving instructions to the police to let them run wild, identify the leaders of the violence and arrest them later at home where the risk of police brutality leading to death is minimal. The calculus is that, once they have taken out the equation enough of the most violent protesters and the rest of them get bored, the protests will die down and the government won’t face scrutiny for killing some of them. It will absolutely work by the way, but it will come at a cost, since it also means there will be more destruction. You may criticize that strategy, I for one certainly find it shameful, but realistically that’s just politicians responding to incentives. The government will take shit for this, but from their point of view, it beats having to deal much worse race riots because a cop killed a kid and the suburbs erupt in an orgy of violence as a result. This is what "multiculturalism" looks like in Europe right now and if you don’t like it you’ré a fascist 🤷‍♂️

I have criticized Kurzweil recently, but one thing I think he was definitely right about is that, while the issue of whether machines are conscious will remain contentious for a very long time, once they reach a certain degree of sophistication, most people will just accept their claims that they are conscious, have feelings, etc. no matter what arguments to the contrary philosophers make.

Indonesia is a country of almost 300 million and its real GDP has been growing at ~5% for the past 30 years. A lot of people in the West still live in the 1950s mentally.
"Aktually Russia is bigger. These capitalist scum are deluded. I am a smart socialist. Look, my profile picture shows me being smart" Bro, you're using PPP. Having Indonesia top 10 probably should have give it away.

Donaldo Trumpo, amigo del pueblo.
If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 Midterm Elections, I’m going to give all adult citizens in the United States of America, $5,000! Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to signing those checks!
Community note
This repeats a promise Trump made in September 2026. The US has approximately 250 million adult citizens so the total cost would be over 1.25 trillion dollars. Congress must approve any such federal spending. nytimes.com/2026/09/10/us/… pbs.org/newshour/polit…

And so it continues... Our economic debates seem utterly disconnected from the reality. That reality: This is an economy mostly creating healthcare jobs, and it does so month after month, and everything else is just noise.

Steve Eisman says Michael Burry’s AI depreciation thesis “too academic” and says an OpenAI failure is the much larger risk “I think, with all due respect to Michael, I think his argument is too academic." "Put it this way: if AI succeeds because Anthropic and OpenAI grow like crazy and the hyperscalers do well, et cetera, et cetera, it’s not going to matter if the depreciation schedule changed from three to four years to five to six years." "At the same time, if OpenAI fails and the whole chain goes in reverse, we’ll have a massive correction which has nothing to do with the depreciation schedule." "I mean, I think what he’s deep down trying to point out is maybe there’s something wrong here, but I don’t think the thing that he’s pointing to as being wrong is important enough.”
Jensen Huang jokes ten Somaek drinks left him with no trouble kissing a Korean man on the mouth, and says he has a lot of fans, especially in Samsung's supply chain group Jensen Huang: “And I’ll just tell you, I’ll just say this one inappropriate thing. I’ve only been kissed in the mouth by a man in Korea.” Juju Chang: “Lori’s like, ‘Where is this going?’” Jensen Huang: “I don’t know. And it was a Samsung employee, Jay.” Juju Chang: “Wow, this is getting really good. Okay.” Jensen Huang: “But we have some serious things I’ve got to say. But I just, what is that drink called where soju goes into the beer? It’s called something.” Juju Chang: “Soju bomb?” Audience: “Somaek.” Juju Chang: “Somaek. Soju and maekju. Somaek. Jensen Huang: "And it goes, right? And then you drink about 10 of those, and you have no trouble kissing a man in the mouth.” Juju Chang: “No wonder you’re so popular in Seoul.” Jensen Huang: “Well, I have a lot of fans. Many of them supply chain of Samsung.” Juju Chang: “Exactly.”

Seoul sees this as Ukraine's attempt to humiliate North Korea and goad Pyongyang into sparking the Second Korean War, which would force Russia to fight in the eastern front. This is why South Korea has been apoplectic. Surprising how many people are missing this basic point.
Leaving aside the obvious, why did Zelenskyy feel the need to make that public in the first place if both nations really agreed to keep this a secret?
