serious AI used to live on someone else’s data center. you rented it by the token. that’s changing. Capable open models now run at every hardware tier, from a gaming PC to a small data center. top models improved by adding hardware. smaller models improved on the same hardware. capability exists at every tier. the complete overview is in the State of Open Source AI report: stateofopensource.ai/

the top tier bought its gains with more hardware. the lower tiers gained points on hardware that stayed fixed.

every closed model can be changed, repriced, or switched off by someone who isn’t you. this week i spoke at @CTOCraft Europe in Amsterdam. i asked them what their plan was for the day their AI provider changes right under them. most don’t have a plan. they have an untested back up plan. and it’s where most AI stack currently sit. here's the big takeaway: you don’t have to own everything. you have to be able to leave.

Once open models get within a few points, benchmarks may not matter as much as optionality. Open weights give control back to the user. Rent a closed model, you’re locked in and the price is theirs to change. Self-host on infrastructure you own, and no one can repossess it. Where do you want to build? the best open model is only three behind closed. open models went from something you could rent, to something you could run. now, you can improve them too. full data in @mozilla's state of open source AI report. stateofopensource.ai/

i’m excited to be speaking at CTO Craft Con Europe in Amsterdam, sept 29-30. open source AI is closing the gap on closed model alternatives. the question is whether your organization is positioned to take advantage of it. take a look at the agenda and i hope to see you there! conference.ctocraft.com/euro…

You might be renting horsepower you don’t need to get the average task done. Closed models can cost ~5x more per task, but that premium only pays off with tasks that take 8-12 hours to complete. Whatever closed can do today, open does ~4 months later. stateofopensource.ai/

this spring, the best closed model scored 60 and the best open models 54. Aayear earlier, the leading open model scored 22. the frontier still leads on the hardest problems — and for the work most builders actually ship, where price, control, and deployability decide, the data does not say “promising. read the full piece from @tech_eu tech.eu/2026/09/18/open-ai-c…

An announcement we're thrilled to share! ✨ Yesterday at ALL IN, Mila and @mozilla unveiled a new initiative to build open, trustworthy AI for everyone. With support from the Government of Canada, an initial $5M investment from Mozilla, and an additional $1M from @HypertecGroup, this collaboration aims to give organizations and institutions a real alternative to proprietary models: AI systems they can own, control, and run locally. Canada was among the first to bet on deep learning. Now, it's betting on open AI as the next big step, and Mila plans to help build it. Full details here: mila.quebec/en/news/mila-and…

79% of developers reach for open models. only 53% of teams ever get one into production. today @Mila_Quebec & @mozilla announced an open source AI foundation layer at ALL IN to help close that gap. this is local ownership, local control, no landlord. a layer that belongs to the institutions running on it, built with a government behind it instead of a vendor above it. own the stack, don't rent it. blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/…
