This demo is built this with React Native/Expo on the new Skia Graphite backend.
With Graphite, Skia and WebGPU run on the same GPU device and pass textures around without copying them. So:
- Skia lays out the article (proper text, line breaks, kerning)
- WebGPU takes the ~15k glyphs and flies them into a 3D sculpture and back
When it's still you're reading Skia's text. When it moves it's WebGPU, drawing the exact same pixels, so you can't see the switch 👀

So excited about the future of React Native Skia. I've been playing with Skia Graphite, and it's been unlocking some truly unique patterns. Can't wait to share more!
We are releasing React Native Skia version 3.0 which runs WebGPU by default. By moving away from the OpenGL-centric design, it allows for multithreading by default as well as deep integration with three.js, vision camera, and transformer.js

What @reczko_konrad built is the closest thing to magic I've seen this year.
Couldn't stop thinking about the concept of drawing with light. So I built this small React Native prototype on top of his shader.
Depth-aware light injection in TypeGPU
I got a 448x448 monocular depth model down to ~8 ms on my M4 Pro across ~250 dispatches, which is fast enough to use in realtime :D
Since the inference is written directly in TypeGPU, I can just feed the depth buffer straight into the lighting pass. It never has to leave the GPU or go through any extra synchronization/interop step
Inference, lighting and draw all go through the same command encoder.
Here depth + surface normals are estimated ahead of time to get the best visual result I could.
Way less impressive than runtime inference 😅, but still so fun for a domain where the image never changes (like paintings!).
The demo is open source with a lot of others React Native animations.

Combining Claude with react-native-webgpu has made creating this kind of animation insanely simple.
Somehow I feel the hard part now is making it feel personal. So having a creeper moving around really helps 👀
The demo is open source, along with 120+ other React Native animations.

If your app feels premium you're going to hold onto users.
That's an easy thing to say and a more difficult thing to do. Which is why we've started gathering all the best, more beautiful open source demos from our community.
Talented people like @reactiive_, @hewad_mubariz, @_philpl, @nater02, @S0LARIN, @rit3zh, @iamarunabh are sharing their code on this page: expo.dev/demos
Check it out and let us know who's work we need to add to the page.
5. True. That's quite a unique use case, but you could reuse the same trick to generate wallpapers, backgrounds, or even your GitHub thumbnails.
The code is fully open source if you'd like to have a look!
