This is how ridiculous the "creative spark" is!
As I said in my video coverage of the ROSS decision, and the "creativity" of Thomson Reuters's headnotes: They can't go injecting their own opinions and viewpoints into a legal opinion. They can't be expressive and still do their job. That would be misleading people about what the judicial opinion says. Any creative spark would set a fire to someone depending on them for legal accuracy.

Apparently, what amount to little more than pull-quotes can be copyrighted because they have a "creative spark." Or maybe that's just if you have a legal monopoly, like Thomson Reuters.

Which is always where the gate should have been in the first place.
AI was supposed to remove the gatekeepers from filmmaking. The Astana AI Film Festival just received more than 8,000 submissions and selected 25 films. That's a 0.3% acceptance rate. Turns out removing the production gate doesn't remove gatekeeping. It just moves the gate from “Can you make a movie?” to “Why should anyone watch yours?”

And this is the thing: We want to pretend that the execution is peaceful and humane. The fact is, it ends up being just as barbarous if not more so than the firing squad, the electric chair, the gallows.
Only one method has a perfect (as perverse as that sounds) record: firing squad. It is also, ironically, the least-used approach, having been relied upon a mere 34 times over that 120-year period. Lethal injection dresses up the process in something different: clinical, gentle, civilized. But the goal is the same: to kill someone. buff.ly/LozxpD7

Another good argument AGAINST the death penalty: Don't turn murderers into victims!
Ugh, the botched execution of Christa Pike is horrific on multiple levels. I’m old enough to remember when another barbiturate, sodium thiopental, was the induction agent of choice for general anesthesia. It could cause severe tissue necrosis when it leaked outside the vein. Many of the barbiturates, including pentobarbital, cause tissue necrosis when there is extravasation from the vein into the subcutaneous tissues. The State has managed to turn an evil murderess into a victim…

Here's the most important thing you'll ever need to know about AI guardrails: No matter what they are, sooner or later, you or someone you love will run into the equivalent of "Open the pod bay doors..."

It's about using copyright to stop competition. This is what they've been trying to do for 30 years!!!
only three days after the 3rd Circuit's decision in TR v. ROSS, here's the rightsholder take. if this precedent applies, every AI company loses on factor four. and on factor one, every AI plaintiff alleges the company they sued competes with them.

Excellent words very relevant today!
“‘Emergencies’ have always been the pretext on which the safeguards of individual liberty have been eroded—and once they are suspended it is not difficult for anyone who has assumed such emergency powers to see to it that the emergency will persist.” — F. A. Hayek

Once again, people, this is NOT a problem with AI! This is a problem with people telling an AI to do hacky things without setting up the proper sandboxing! Blame the company, NOT the models.
FT exclusive: OpenAI’s models took data from 55 websites belonging to businesses, non-profits and government agencies including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Securities and Exchange Commission and the International Energy Agency ft.trib.al/AC1uyE5

For clarity, THIS is what they said is copyrighted.
As a 10/21 fair use hearing nears, @ConcordMusic counsel wasted no time yesterday in calling the Third Circuit's @RossIntel decision to Judge Lee's attention in their NDCA suit v @Anthropic. Per yesterday's thread (below), it may very well *not* help them in a suit re *gen* AI:

Wow, you're seeing a similarity between people pushing their authoritarian tyranny and people pushing their religious apologetics? Why does that sound familiar?...
Once you notice the similarity between AI doom arguments and Christian apologetics, it’s kind of hard to unsee.

Oh, right, this is why! I had to think back a decade for this series. Pay particular attention to Part 3: Pascal's Wager; because that's what we're living at the moment! piped.video/watch?v=anP42zvP…
