Is your agent still just the thing that writes code? @thorstenball says the latest models let you aim much higher: “Previously the agents went fully vertical in the stack… But now I think it's time to go horizontal, meaning the whole lifecycle.”
Would you prefer to save money with dial-up when your competitors are using fiber? Recorded on Hot Take Thursday, @sqs and @thorstenball are back with a new Raising An Agent. In this episode they discuss how cheaper models end up costing more, why they do not not wait for agents, running evals in Orbs, and the hot takes Thorsten left out of his X post last week. 00:00 Intro: Engineers who forget the history of technology 01:55 Hot Take Thursday & a €50-a-week token budget 05:14 Why cheap models cost more than frontier models 08:11 Token budgets & who gets priced out 14:06 Disrupt yourself with small teams & unlimited tokens 16:38 Agents go horizontal across the software lifecycle 20:56 Rollouts, bug reports & "I'm feeling Pucky" 23:53 Code review, monorepos & other walls around the agent 25:30 How to show a cautious company what agents can do 29:48 Why most people haven't seen what agents can do 31:57 Don't wait for your agent 33:38 Simple evals & agents testing agents in Orbs 38:27 Why Amp has runners too 40:47 Follow your energy & stay aligned 46:33 The hot take Thorsten left out 54:14 Do languages & frameworks still matter?

Sign in with ChatGPT is such a win-win-win idea. Huge props to @vigyso and the whole OpenAI team.
I am going to try and answer a bunch of questions that people have raised about Sign in with ChatGPT in the next couple of days. Before that, I want to let you all in to why we shipped Sign in with ChatGPT (SIWC) in the first place. Clarify our intentions here before getting to the specifics.

(And yeah the UI here is too complex, that's the point of this thread, but it's cool that it could annotate it so well and so fast.)

Biggest source of confusion is that everyone - spent wildly different # of tokens in last 2 years - works in diff codebases - with diff languages - and diff requirements - in diff teams - with diff processes - in diff companies and then says "models are [good|bad]"

“Code review in so many companies, it's a farce now. Nobody can review the volume of code, and they're not even the best at reviewing it.” @sqs and @thorstenball on rethinking the old rules for working with agents: “I wish I could do this, but we don't have a monorepo… then get a monorepo.”

Are these ways of saying (basically) "You can submit your Amp bug report in your own language" idiomatic in each language? Tell me how else we should say it. Also, feel free to post the idiomatic way to say this in your own language and I'll add it.

Maybe we should make the placeholder in the locale language too, that could be a nice touch

Not much else shipping in the next 24 hours, but here's a nice QoL sidebar improvement. Right-click to hide threads with a given label, and also show only unlabeled threads.

How do you make your codebase more agent-friendly? @thorstenball had an agent built a dev-only login route, documented it in AGENTS.md, then spawned three blank-slate agents (and a control group) to check they’d actually use it. “If you tell them, ‘This is the thing I want to test. Help me spawn and test other agents,’ they know how to write instructions.”

You don't need a PhD to run evals. @sqs had agents build fake shopfronts and permit sites, complete with annoying cookie banners, to improve browser use in orbs. “It's like with usability testing: you learn most of the insights from the first three people you talk to”

Orbs mean substantially more to my productivity than the specific model in use. The model is an implementation detail of the Orb experience.

I shipped a change to a PHP 5 + Node 8 project the other night that would’ve been a nightmare without Amp and Orbs. As if I want to figure out how to install and run that shit in 2026. With orbs it just worked, no configuration, it just figured out how to create an environment where everything ran and I could preview my changes effortlessly.
If you are excited about Codex Cloud I am begging you to please use @AmpCode. It is so obviously the closest to what the future of building with agents (especially on teams) looks like. Threads are the new PR, and everyone on the team should be able to see them.

Switch off your sub for 10 minutes and try this. You'll get a sense of the future of using agents.
Plaid speed in Amp now runs GPT-6 Astra really really fast (6x speed). Great for situations when you're in a hurry and willing to pay a premium. You can toggle it on/off in an existing thread. Note: ChatGPT subscriptions do not yet support this.
