If you’re shopping for an RTX 5080, there’s little reason to buy the more expensive versions. They all come with the same GPU, same 16GB VRAM, same 256-bit bus, same CUDA core count, and basically the same performance. What you’re getting is a bigger cooler, maybe less noise, RGB (gotta have RGB), and more overclocking headroom, for hundreds of dollars more. Unless you’re a serial overclocker, paying that premium makes no sense.

I got the Gigabyte RTX 5080 WINDFORCE OC SFF because it fit my 3U build and my budget. But seeing so many show up open-box made me concerned. Turns out there’s no real catch. I gave up basically nothing in performance. Whew.

Art Lown’s Piper Oz the Hound just came up for sale on Discogs (“Deep Blue Sea” is my fav). A little over my budget, unfortunately.

Someone’s been quietly cooking too

I've been reviewing code with both Codex Sol 6.1 and Claude Opus 5.5 today. Basically copying one agent's response into the other and asking "what do you think?" back and forth for like 10 turns. Half a year ago I had a review orchestrator that would do this automatically until both agents reached a consensus. Time to bring it back.

Wednesday Steam Frame check: US self-reported purchases hit 37.8%, up only 0.5 points since Monday. A significant slowdown! I wonder why? Ergo and replacement kits are sold out, and iFixit still has no Frame parts. Also, SteamOS 0.4.2 beta is out, with fixes for streaming audio and connection errors.

Refresh ChatGPT Analytics (Usage) page, wait ~30s, usage drops from 90% to 80%. So which one is it?

API responds with "used_percent: 10" on page refresh but then "used_percent: 20" after a while

Not sure why the banked reset countdown was needed if the reset still hasn’t landed 50 minutes later.

BREAKING: Anthropic is making a massive bet that AI will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity and the internet, per Reuters. Anthropic reported a net ‌loss of $42 billion in 2025, and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in coming year, according to the prospectus.

Is it me, or is the current Codex CLI (v0.158.0) kinda broken? Whenever a notification or question is up, I can’t scroll back or copy anything in the terminal.

Monday Steam Frame check: US self-reported purchases are at 37.3%, up from 33.6% Friday. Links trickled out over the weekend, but no big wave today. Still no Frame parts on iFixit. And Steam just says “Available with Purchase” for accessories, leaving stock a mystery. Fun fact: among people who reported buying accessories, 80.6% got the ergonomic kit, 36.8% the power supply, and 12.7% the replacement kit. Yet somehow the replacement kit sold out first in the US.

So to summarize: OpenAI is cooking, I’m cooking, you're cooking, everyone else is cooking, and then we’re all getting cooked. A lot of cooking going on this week.
We’re cooked if openai releases Codex $500 plans

OpenAI is cooking for DevDay, and I’ve got a ton to cook this week too. A couple of RN/TS/JS SDKs with enhancements and examples, a couple of custom native WebAuthn implementations, a handful of new endpoints... plenty to do. Glad I managed to upgrade to the $200 Codex plan at the last minute. With two banked resets (aka "tibos"), I should be just about covered.

P.S. Slight FOMO over not having a bigger Claude plan, but I should be good.

One thing I somehow forgot to factor into building a new gaming rig: I may need to buy a full-price Windows license too. Sigh.
Recent GPU price jumps finally convinced me to retire my 2022 gaming laptop (NVIDIA 3070 Ti, 8GB VRAM, 150W TDP) and replace it with a rack-mounted gaming rig. It was somehow both ridiculously loud and increasingly underpowered. Can confirm DDR5 and GPU prices are INSANE. I first looked into upgrading a month ago, but decided to wait for the 50-series SUPER refresh. Now I’m convinced neither the refresh nor the 60-series is coming anytime soon, and prices just keep climbing. Would’ve saved a couple hundred bucks if I’d bought then. Anyway, I found an open-box RTX 5080 at Sunnyvale Micro Center for a lot less than new retail and used eBay prices. I WISH I could get a 5090, but I’m honestly afraid to even check their prices. 9800X3D + 32GB DDR5 + RTX 5080, eventually living in a Sliger CX3171a (whenever that arrives). Three-year minimum warranty on everything. I do overthink and over-engineer, but hopefully this buys me a few years of not thinking or engineering at all.
