One of the largest container ships in the world, the MSC Nela, is in the port of Long Beach today. She has a capacity of 23,656 TEUs!
I was confused because at with a fully laden draught of 58 feet, she's too big to call at any US ports, and yet there she is.
Turns out, the current ocean freight rates on Asia-US lanes are so much higher than those Asia to Europe that it's more profitable to operate ships at 80% capacity to the US than it is try and send them full from Asia to Europe.
Even our shallow ports and crappy infra can't hold America back!
