It was a seemingly innocuous email, sent on a Wednesday morning in January 2017, that started everything. Arriving in the inbox of a senior official at Manchester City, it appeared to have been sent by an employee from European football’s governing body, UEFA, and contained a link to a financial compliance report. The City official clicked the download button. That was all it took. It was not a genuine email from UEFA but a successful phishing attempt by Portuguese hacker and activist Rui Pinto. City’s servers were breached, allowing Pinto to retrieve thousands of emails and documents from the club’s systems. This week, almost 10 years on from Pinto’s first email, the Premier League announced that an independent panel had found City guilty of all but one of the charges against them, as The Athletic first revealed last Friday. 📝 @jwhitey98: nyti.ms/4z5sgoL

Italy booed off by a stadium that's only two-thirds full if that. Not a great start to Mancini's second spell. 1-0 down at half-time to Belgium

AC Milan have yet to open talks with Christian Pulisic over a new contract, The Athletic understands. Pulisic’s existing deal is due to expire at the end of this season although Milan have the option to roll it over for another year, taking it to the end of June, 2028. Milan’s intention is to keep the forward beyond his current contract, as demonstrated by their refusal to entertain interest from MLS side New York City at the beginning of the summer, according to sources familiar with the situation. As the mascots walked out with the players before Lecce played Monza at the Via del Mare last weekend, supporters noticed something different about their appearance. They were all girls from the region and, as they lined up for the pre-game ceremony, it became clear a red handprint had been painted on each of their faces. Lecce changed the usual pre-match protocol in order to highlight the need to prevent and eliminate violence against women. Between July and August alone, there were at least eight suspected cases of femicide in Italy. Then in September, Lorena Isceri, from Squinzano near Lecce, was murdered too. Her death left Lecce’s president Saverio Sticchi Damiani and his wife, Marina, so shocked they decided to do something about it. 📝 @JamesHorncastle bit.ly/4hf7XOE
