Very chuffed to get my hands on a copy of my book World Cup Fever - a story of the tournament told through my own nine World Cups. It's out in English and Dutch in early October, but you can already preorder it, e.g. here waterstones.com/book/world-c…

Agreed. I don't sympathise with City. They knowingly broke the rules, which is cheating. My point is that the rules are silly, and reserve the league title for the three or so clubs with the highest revenues (bar the once-in-50-years event of Leicester winning the league)
Replying to @KuperSimon
That might be a good point but I would have more sympathy with Man City is they were trying to change the rules rather than break them and trying to cover it all up.

However, the Premier League has become the highest-quality league in the world. I sort of think money had something to do with that

The dangers of publishing links which non-subscribers can’t access. They then react to the headline unfortunately. Sensible article.

Manchester City has been found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations. Simon Kuper argues the football club should be punished, but the rules on spending and ownership should also change.

Oh dear lord read the article people I literally say that City should be punished for breaking the rules, i.e. cheating. Here's the article again for those with the stamina to read 650 whole words. Free link. Shout at me only after reading as.ft.com/r/d5fa88f1-1ef1-41…

The fucking Russian war criminals just bombed the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv. I have no idea how many people were inside and there’s at least one dead at the side entrance.

Very smart piece that shows that if you stop owners spending money, middling sides have almost no chance of challenging the top dogs. "Growing organically" into becoming a title-winning side doesn't happen

Jeez where to start my article literally says nation states shouldn't be allowed to buy clubs. Please stop this
Replying to @KuperSimon @FT
So you want nation states to buy all the big clubs and further corrupt our game? "Keep politics out of football" they said, while promoting this rubbish

Err as I say in my article. People, the basic rule is that you have to read the article before shouting at me. I know reading is really tiring and everything but don't try to guess what I said from reading my three-line tweet

Er sports washing is one of the accusations directed at City’s owners.

This is a misunderstanding. I do worry about small clubs without rich owners going into administration. They invariably survive (see e.g. Bury and Macclesfield) but lots of damage is done. The Man C/Newcastle issues are totally different
Replying to @KuperSimon
That’s fine then…don’t worry about the pyramid! What about Everton, Vilka and Sunderland who almost went into administration, sheff wed and leeds. Plus dodgy owners at Liverpool! ? All small clubs? What if PIF pull out of NU?

Clubs that go into administration aren't big clubs with rich owners who give them money. They are almost invariably small clubs without rich owners
It’s also put over 50 clubs into administration in the last 26 years…
