Ten years of Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Today everyone is celebrating that it stayed free. I do not think free is what protects it. I think free is the actual risk.
Every taxi ride in India, UPI comes up before I say what I do. Every trip outside India, two things come up the moment someone learns I am Indian. Our Prime Minister, and UPI. That is what India is known for on a global stage, and I do not take that lightly.
That pride is exactly why I have spent the last year sitting with a harder question. Should UPI stay free, or be funded properly. The merchant discount rate (MDR) debate has split people I respect into two camps that mostly talk past each other.
One camp believes any fee threatens the promise that built UPI. I understand that instinct completely. It comes from the same place my own pride in this system comes from.
I landed somewhere else. Free is not the same as costless. Somebody has always paid to keep UPI running, honestly through a calibrated fee, or invisibly through underinvested infrastructure running on borrowed time.
The headroom backs this up. UPI reaches roughly 500 million monthly active users today. Another 600 million people are already banked and reachable, simply not yet onboarded. Brazil's Pix system reached 91 percent of its adult population in under five years. India's headroom is not hypothetical.
I wrote the full argument for Financial Express, in print last week. The headline: leaving UPI unfunded is the real risk.
Loving UPI and wanting it funded properly come from the same place, not opposite ones.
