Regulators are already planning around this. NIST has proposed deprecating RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography after 2030 and disallowing it after 2035. Big systems take years to migrate, so for a lot of organisations, that clock is already running.

Blockchains have it worse, because public keys are public by design. Break the maths behind one, and you're not just reading someone's data; You can sign transactions as them and move their funds.

Some of the damage can happen before Q-Day even arrives. Attackers can grab encrypted data now and wait for the hardware to catch up. It's like stealing a safe you can't open yet and keeping it in the garage until you can.

Nobody has built that machine yet. What keeps changing is how big it would need to be: 2019: ~20M qubits to break RSA-2048 2025: under 1M, in under a week 2026: under 500k to break the curves behind Bitcoin and Ethereum, in minutes

Public-key cryptography is like a padlock anyone can click shut, but only the keyholder can open. Normal computers can't work backwards from the lock to the key. A big enough quantum computer running Shor's algorithm, first published in 1994, could.

For most jobs, that only gets you a small speedup. Quantum won't make your emails send any faster. But for a few specific maths problems, the speedup is huge, and unluckily those are the problems most of today's digital security is built on.

You've probably heard that a quantum computer "tries every answer at once." That's not really how it works. A better picture is noise-cancelling headphones. The algorithm is set up so that wrong answers cancel each other out, and the right one comes through loud.

Normal computers run on bits, and a bit is basically a light switch. It's either on or off. A qubit works more like a wave. And the useful thing about waves is that they can cancel each other out.

Quantum computers could one day open the locks that protect most of the internet. The day that happens has a name: Q-Day. It isn't here yet, but it's getting closer faster than most people expected. Here's what quantum computing actually is, and why Q-Day matters 🧵

Algorand started on this in 2022, signing its State Proofs with Falcon, a post-quantum signature scheme selected by NIST. In August, the v5.0.0 upgrade made Falcon-1024 accounts native on mainnet, with support in the SDKs, AlgoKit, and Pera Wallet.

In March, Google's quantum team cited Algorand as a real-world example of post-quantum crypto on a live blockchain. Consensus is the next piece to migrate, with broad quantum resilience targeted for the end of 2027. Working on your own post-quantum plan? Our DMs are open. algorand.co/blog/algorand-po…

A 1-cent API call. At standard published card rates, the processing fee is about 30 cents. Cards were never designed for software to buy one response at a time. x402 on Algorand is. New guide 👇 algorand.co/learn/why-api-ke…

Algorand CSMO @marcvl sat down with @RTB_io to talk about what's kept Algorand pushing forward for 7+ years. From solving the blockchain trilemma to native post-quantum accounts, Python & TypeScript support, and the first tokenized public stock. A pretty long list of firsts, and still counting.

A decent computer. A solid internet connection. 30K ALGO. That's all it takes to run an Algorand validator and earn staking rewards. Join 1.5K+ validators helping secure one of the most decentralized networks out there.

The White House and leaders of Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, and Nvidia signed an accord on controls and audits for frontier AI. Agents need controls too. We built AC2 on Algorand to keep credentials out of your agent's hands and prove you approved what it signs.
