Continuation of my old video-as-3d-object demo Always wanted to extend it further with segmentation so you can search for any type of object within the scene
All videos are actually three-dimensional objects Usually what we see is just a small slice along the axis of time, but what if we could tangibly interact with the geometry of this space?

it's easy to fall into the trap of micromanaging your agents instead of correcting the environment that shapes its behavior. pstack 0.15.9 now ships a new /correct skill: if you keep correcting agents for the same mistakes, it finds the pattern and fixes it with architecture, types, and checks. i like to imagine that commits rapidly flowing into the codebase are like a bonsai tree rapidly growing in whatever direction it pleases. what you want to do is not to give in to the chaos, but tame it intentionally with the right constraints 0.15.9 also has improvements to: • /architect: now includes instructions on designing agent friendly architecture • a new /benchmark-checklist skill based on @brendangregg's benchmarking checklist here's a prompt you can give to grok bot to start architecting a better codebase with pstack: /poteto-mode create a new Project agent to refactor and rearchitect my repo so that our architecture is more agent friendly. it should use both the /correct and /architect skill to look through past commits and find the most common pitfalls that agents fall into, whether its with code quality, performance, or bugs. if relevant you can also use the /recall skill to find past conversations for context. it should make a high level plan for me to review. it should also answer its own open questions by prototyping rather than defer to me. come back to me with a plan backed by real data. once i approve the plan, use either the stack or full autopilot playbook (ask me which i want) to execute
every time you intervene and correct your agent, you should think about how to eliminate it entirely. in order of value: 1. categorically eliminate the problem through better architecture or choice of data structures 2. turn it into a lint rule or test so CI catches it 3. turn it into a skill or rule 4. have humans review the code to catch it (ngmi)

My hot take from chatting to @poteto is that we should use MORE abstractions in the AI age You can use them (combined with harsh lint rules) to reduce the design space available to the agent and constrain them only to good decisions. Combined with the fact that high-leverage abstractions let you do more with less code - so, more token efficient. Plus, unwinding the damage from a bad abstraction is much cheaper with agents. This runs counter to a lot of folks thinking that agents just want to read the raw code. They can, but they're not maximally efficient that way. Be braver! Design abstractions.

wise words from the best systems engineer I've worked with: "two things that make code actually maintainable: 1. reduce the layers a reader has to trace 2. reduce the state a reader has to hold in their head" applies to every codebase. always.

A framework is an intelligence cache. You could waste tokens reinventing the ORM, cache, queues, auth, routing, etc, or you could just pick a world-class framework.
I don’t know if I agree with this take. Good frameworks are intelligence caches. The production of verifiable high-quality code has a cost to it (insert for now caveat). Frameworks can lower this cost as long as they don’t get in the way of agents.

We'll be spending a lot more time trying to understand the outputs of language models. A few thoughts, tips & tricks: Writing. Something I've had success with: Ask your LLM to explain something in ASD-STE100, it's a controlled language specification originally developed for aerospace maintenance documentation. LLMs well-versed in this language and it comes with heavy constraints on clean writing style that I often find a lot more readable. Sometimes I've tried to soften it a bit e.g. ask for "80% of the way to ASD-STE100" because the spec is quite stringent. But even better: Diagrams / images. Instead of writing, ask your LLM to create a diagram. These can be a lot easier to process, parse, and understand. But even better: Web pages. Ask for output "in HTML" to get a beautiful, interactive webpage. LLMs are getting really good at frontend and can create beautiful experiences, animations, etc. But even better: Explainer videos. The output format I am most bullish on is fully custom / bespoke explainer videos generated on any arbitrary topic. Experiment with things like "Create a 3b1b style video explainer on X. Use my ElevenLabs API key for audio narration". (you'd need an API key for the latter or you can ask your LLM to find you decent free alternatives that use your local compute). This is actually starting to work! In summary: - As LLMs get better, they will do more and more of the legwork autonomously, and a lot more of our work will rise up the abstractions into oversight and understanding. - Luckily, LLMs can help here too because as intelligence and code are increasingly abundant, you can ask for large, custom, discardable software artifacts (e.g. web apps, video explainers) that would have never made sense to create before. Push the boundaries here and you'll be surprised.

People seem shocked that the author of Clean Code doesn't read code anymore. But that should not be surprising. Why did I write Clean Code? What is the goal of keeping code clean? To get it out of the way of the real job -- thinking.

Stages of grief about the effect of AI on open source. Denial: - AI code is slop! Nobody serious will use this. - Open source will keep working exactly like it always has. Anger: - These AI slop PRs are ruining GitHub! - Ban AI-generated code! - If you close PRs, you're not open source anymore! Bargaining: - Okay, AI can write code, but only if a human reviews every line. - Maybe adversarial AI review will make arbitrary external code intake safe again. Depression: - Wait, if code generation is basically free, what is a contribution anymore? - Is GitHub-style open source culture just going away? Acceptance: - Open source is still open source, even if the contribution model evolves. - Good issues, test cases, benchmarks, specifications, and ideas become the scarce inputs. - Upstream may stop accepting arbitrary code while forking becomes much easier. Bonus stage! Reconstruction: - Projects redesign around maintainer-controlled agents, issue-driven development, stronger test/validation infrastructure, and new ways for contributors to earn trust.
