There is a strange kind of poverty in having money you cannot properly use. I know that sounds contradictory, but I started thinking about it differently the first time I realised that seeing money in my account and actually being able to use that money were not always the same thing. For the longest time, I thought the hardest part of earning was getting someone to pay me. Find the work, do the work, deliver the work, get paid. Simple. Then I started doing more work online, and the whole thing became more interesting. A client could be in another country, the work could happen entirely online, and the payment could arrive in crypto. I could look at the number in my wallet and know, technically, that I had earned money. But if the person I needed to pay was asking for naira, the shop around me was accepting naira, Or I needed to send money to someone in Nigeria, the number in my wallet could suddenly feel very far away from the life I was actually living. That feeling is difficult to explain until you’ve experienced it. You are not broke. You are not unpaid. You are not without value. You worked for the money and you received it. Yet there is still a distance between you and the thing that money is supposed to help you do. And when you are young and still finding your feet, that distance can feel bigger than it should. Because every payment means something. Sometimes it is proof that your skill can actually make money. Sometimes it is the first sign that the work you have been learning to do can take you beyond the people and places immediately around you. Sometimes it is the money you want to keep because you are tired of having to start from zero every time something unexpected happens. And sometimes, it is simply the relief of knowing that after all those hours of work, You can finally take care of something that has been sitting at the back of your mind. So when the money gets stuck at the point between “I received it” and “I can use it,” it feels like the story has stopped halfway. That is why I find the evolution of work so interesting. The internet has made it possible for someone sitting in Nigeria to earn from a person they may never meet, Contribute to a company they may never visit, create for an audience they may never see in person, And receive value from a global economy without having to leave their room. Web3 made that relationship with money even more digital. But our lives are still physical. The laptop still needs to work. The person you promised to help is still at home. The thing you have been saving towards still has a price attached to it. And when you finally earn, you should not have to feel like your money has travelled halfway around the world and then gotten lost just before reaching you.
