This bill was entirely a W.
Sen. Todd Young’s Heartland Visa Act of 2024 had quite the coalition of supporters, including -Americans for Prosperity, -AEI -Manhattan Institute -Niskanen Center -AOL co-founder Steve Case. The pitch? Bring highly skilled foreign workers and entrepreneurs into struggling American communities to reverse population decline, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth. Because apparently, the solution to revitalizing the heartland is importing foreign talent instead of investing in the people, businesses, and communities already there. Last night was a mid-2010s presidential debate. I didn’t know we were expected to come prepared with something nice to say about our enemies.

Is it just me or does it feel weird the level of commitment some people have to retconning the 2000s as this period of turbocapitalist soullessness? George Bush was president, big whoop.
primetime is the first true period film about the 2000s and it has it on lock. the film is not about pedophiles or about the ethics of television it is about how insane, psychopathic, and soul-annihilating that period of history was. mcmansions included. 9/10.

BREAKING: Senior White House officials reportedly urged AG Todd Blanche to delay action on abortion until after the midterms for political reasons. Unborn children cannot be put on a political calendar. Their lives do not become more valuable after Election Day. Protect children from the abortion pill now!

Neat how the discovery of iPSCs pretty much ended the stem cell research debate like one year after we had it. I likely would’ve voted against the ‘05 bill (definitely against the successive ones) but I get the argument for it. Insane, with hindsight we had a "nay" Democrat.

It is the fate of all the world, save Africa (at present) to become a giant care home, lest something shift the fundamental paradigms.
And so it continues... Our economic debates seem utterly disconnected from the reality. That reality: This is an economy mostly creating healthcare jobs, and it does so month after month, and everything else is just noise.

Also, the intra-GOP coalitions are wild. John Cornyn, Chuck Hagel, Liz Dole, and Mike DeWine voted no, while TRENT LOTT and Orrin Hatch voted yes.

I believe in objective morality but personally I find some of the stuff in the moral universe it describes hard to swallow People I love might go to hell? I have to love my enemy? I have to turn the other cheek? I have to take unpopular positions in public?
Curiously, everyone who believes in "objective morality" seems to conclude that it agrees with everything they want to be true

Name a politician from each party who you like more than one would think given their political profile. For instance, I like Mike Johnson and Tim Kaine even though Johnson is much more Trump-aligned than me and Kaine even though he's much more dovish than me.

Takes for today: 1. Hyde Amendment could go a little further even 2. Ban frats 3. Can we popularize the Eric Schmitt moment enough that it gets its own Wikipedia article
