“The Trump administration has developed a range of methods to weaponize a system already stacked against asylum seekers…. To an unprecedented degree, many have been sent to third countries with which they had no ties, from Panama to Ghana.” —@Tanvim go.nybooks.com/4vg2jRk

They negotiate gun deals between classes. They source rifles on WhatsApp and Telegram- or sometimes steal them. And they are helping arm some of Mexico’s most powerful cartels. I spent months reporting inside a network of American teenage gun traffickers. My investigation: nytimes.com/2026/10/03/world…

Meanwhile, present-day anti-Indian racism:
For Places Journal, I wrote an essay about a 1907 anti-Indian riot in Bellingham, Washington--which led to the expulsion of over 200 Punjabi immigrants from the city--and the thin line between vigilantism and official policy.

SUPER interesting. I was not tracking this. The judge found the law criminalizing noncitizen voting is a voter qualification statute outside of Congress’s power. Surprisingly, this is an issue of first impression! Prosecutions are so rare no one brought this challenge before.

reason.com/2026/09/19/custom… In my latest for @reason I dove into what's happening with sex workers at the US border, and the almost certain use of facial recognition to profile them- even if they're traveling for personal reasons.

WOW. Over the last year, @ICEgov has angrily rejected claims that deaths in detention had any connection to poor medical care. But behind the scenes, ICE's own medical auditors issued death reviews finding patterns of neglect in the care of multiple people who died in custody.
For @theintercept I wrote about ICE posting then deleting a bunch of records from its website and how 6/8 of the mortality reviews of deaths in custody from 2025 found that detention staff broke (sometimes pretty egregiously!) with standards of med care. theintercept.com/2026/09/30/…

Every year at Cornell, I teach about Working Women United. It was Cornell workers who first put a name to "sexual harassment" — reaching a wider conscience. They didn't see abuses as individual tragic events. They saw abuse in terms of social hierarchy and institutional power.
