Moriah Adika wanted affordable clothes for university. What he found was a fragmented market where shoppers had to search through thrift stalls, open-air markets, and scattered social media vendors. So, the geophysics student taught himself to code and built Cedisaver, an online marketplace bringing affordable fashion from different vendors onto one platform.

Yoco started with card machines, but the business grew into something much bigger: building the infrastructure that helped small businesses accept digital payments and participate in a changing financial system. The journey from “Will anyone believe in this?” to building a company that could survive the next decade is a reminder of what the Class of 2016 had to navigate: sceptical institutions, uncertain markets, difficult fundraising rounds, and the constant pressure to prove that the business could actually work. Because sometimes, survival isn’t about sticking to the first idea. It’s about having enough conviction to keep going — and enough flexibility to become something else along the way. Ten years later, what does Yoco’s journey tell us about what it really takes to build a company that lasts? Read the second article from the class of 16 collection : techcabal.com/2026/10/02/yoc… #Classof16 #techcabalclassof16

Some of the biggest African tech stories don’t begin with a breakthrough. Sometimes, they begin with a card machine, a difficult pitch, and a bank that wasn’t immediately convinced. When @Yoco_ZA started out, the founders spent their first year trying to get a bank to say yes. Mercantile Bank eventually agreed, only for the lead investor to pull its term sheet. Instead of walking away, the angel investors stayed in and put in more. That early uncertainty would become part of the story.

Dangote’s IPO is testing the market Nigerian startups may eventually need. Venture capital has poured billions into African startups. But when investors want their money back, the options are still limited: sell to another investor, find an acquirer, or keep waiting for another funding round. Nigeria has never produced a VC-backed IPO. This is why Dangote Refinery’s IPO is interesting beyond the size of the transaction. The refinery is looking to raise about $1.62 billion and attract as many as 10 million retail investors. If it succeeds, it could show that a deep enough pool of Nigerian capital is willing to participate in large public offerings. This does not mean startups can suddenly replicate Dangote’s playbook. They cannot. Dangote has the scale, assets, operating history, brand recognition, distribution network, and capital to market an offering at a level most startups cannot. Nigeria already has an NGX Growth Board, a Technology Board, and provisions in the Startup Act intended to facilitate startup listings. Yet no Nigerian startup has tested the public market at scale. Dangote's IPO is a market test. And if it succeeds, it would prove that the market startups need for exits actually exists. techcabal.com/2026/10/02/dan…

What do 1,200 Kenyans tell a chatbot that they won’t tell another human being? Many people think generative AI was built to draft emails and automate spreadsheets. But nearly half of the Kenyans surveyed in a recent study are using it as a 24/7 digital confidant, sharing personal anxieties, relationship crises and unspoken secrets. In this edition of Delve Into AI, Adonijah Ndege examines new research by Nendo. This Nairobi-based research consultancy reveals how chatbots are quietly crossing the line from productivity tools to emotional safe spaces, and why seeking life advice from code carries subtle new risks. Safaricom, Kenya’s largest telecommunications company and operator of M-PESA, is bringing tap-to-pay to physical shops through a partnership with Pesapal, a Kenyan payments company that provides point-of-sale terminals to merchants. Customers with near field communication (NFC)-enabled Android or iPhone devices can now tap their phones on compatible Pesapal terminals to pay a merchant through M-PESA, rather than manually entering the merchant’s Till Number, a code used to receive M-PESA payments. Customers without NFC can scan a quick response (QR) code instead. The partnership lets Safaricom put M-PESA on thousands of existing checkout terminals without building its own POS network. techcabal.com/2026/10/01/saf…

Kora, a Nigerian-founded fintech that provides payment rails for businesses across African markets, has launched One Rail, a product that integrates stablecoin payment and settlement options into its existing network. The new product allows eligible merchants in supported markets to accept payments in dollar-backed stablecoins USDT and USDC, convert between supported assets, and settle funds to bank accounts, mobile wallets, or stablecoin wallets through Kora’s existing infrastructure. Kora said it is expanding access in stages, with supported functions varying by market and the payment rails enabled for each merchant. The move comes as African fintech infrastructure providers, including Onafriq and Fincra, are increasingly turning to stablecoin-based options for cross-border payments. 👉 : techcabal.com/2026/10/01/kor…

Data centres are the infrastructure that stores and processes the digital information used by cloud applications and artificial intelligence. They are usually built on land and packed with servers that need electricity and fibre connections to keep data moving. Satlyt, a space-tech startup with its African headquarters in Nairobi, is betting that some of that computing can happen in space. The startup builds software to let satellites process data and run artificial intelligence (AI) applications on the computers already inside the spacecraft. Satlyt has raised $8 million in seed funding to build towards that vision. non sibi ventures, a Houston-headquartered early-stage venture capital firm, led the round, with participation from TLCOM, Antler, Slauson & Co., Launch Africa Ventures, Enza Capital, Askya Investment Partners, Demos, BAG Collective, Gaingels, Axian Investment and other investors. The company will use the funding to expand its engineering and customer delivery teams and deploy its software across more spacecraft operated by other companies. 👉 : techcabal.com/2026/10/01/the…

Airtel Money has priced its London initial public offering at £1.96 ($2.59) per share, valuing the mobile money business at £5.3 billion ($7 billion) ahead of its October 14 debut, according to a regulatory filing on Thursday. This marks the first time the market will put a public price on Airtel Africa’s fastest-growing business, after years of turning mobile money into a major part of the group’s financial story. But the $7 billion valuation is below the $8–9 billion range reported when the IPO was announced, and most of the sale proceeds will go to existing investors rather than Airtel Africa or Airtel Money. 👉 techcabal.com/2026/10/01/air…

Rising Tide Africa, a women-led pan-African angel investment network, has committed up to ₦1.4 billion ($1 million) to Ororo Waste Management Limited, a Lagos-based used cooking oil (UCO) waste management company, to expand its collection infrastructure and working capital. Ororo Waste, Lagos State’s partner for institutional-scale UCO collection and export, received the first allocation on September 16, with additional funding potentially available through December 16. The new capital will finance the purchase of used cooking oil from its collector network and cover hub operating costs. Africa’s retail-investing boom is exposing a problem beneath the apps: the infrastructure connecting investors to capital markets isn’t always ready for the demand. Dangote Refinery’s $1.6 billion IPO is a useful test. When the offer opened in Nigeria, fintech platforms Bamboo and Cowrywise struggled with a surge in traffic. But the infrastructure challenge looks different outside Nigeria. For Zimbabweans, accessing the IPO through Bard Santner Investors requires regulatory approvals, cross-border bank transfers and nominee arrangements. Applications have largely been handled manually, with a minimum investment of $20,000. The bigger lesson is that “digital access” is only one part of investing. A transaction can depend on fintech apps, banks, brokers, payment rails, KYC providers and other third-party services. When one link struggles, the whole experience can slow down. Africa wants more retail investors in its capital markets. To get there, the infrastructure behind the interfaces needs to scale too. Get the full story: techcabal.com/2026/09/30/dan…

Nigeria wants more critical data stored at home. But as the CBN tightens localisation requirements for financial institutions and the government builds a broader cloud framework, a bigger question is emerging: can multiple regulators enforce data sovereignty without creating a costly compliance maze? The issue is not simply localisation. It is about who regulates what, where their mandates overlap, and how businesses navigate requirements covering payment data, cloud infrastructure, backups and disaster recovery. We spoke with technology policy and legal experts about where the CBN’s sector-specific mandate meets NITDA’s broader technology and cloud responsibilities — and why coordination may matter as much as localisation itself. We explore the implications in this analysis. techcabal.com/2026/09/28/how…

CBN rate cuts are supposed to make borrowing cheaper. So, when the benchmark interest rate falls, banks are expected to lend more, and small businesses to have easier access to credit. Over the past decade, the CBN has taken the MPR from 11% to 27.5%, cut it during the pandemic, and tightened policy again as inflation surged. TechCabal analysed 10 years of CBN data to see how bank lending to small businesses changed as the benchmark rate moved. The data shows that SME lending sometimes rose when rates fell, but it also rose during periods of aggressive rate hikes, and fell even when rates were lower. This week on Follow the Money, we looked at the numbers to understand what is really driving credit to Nigeria’s small businesses, and why lower interest rates haven’t necessarily translated into more SME loans. That story is bigger than one startup or one failed idea. In 2016, Africa's tech ecosystem looked very different from what it is today. Founders were experimenting, investors were placing early bets, and many startups were trying to figure out what it really meant to build companies for fragmented, infrastructure-constrained markets. Some ideas survived. Some evolved. Some shut down. And others became something completely different from what their founders first imagined.

A decade ago, @BuuPass was exploring an ambitious idea: a solar-powered bus equipped with Wi-Fi that could also serve as an internet café. It was an attempt to rethink how people could access transportation and connectivity through one innovative model. BuuPass was part of a generation of African startups that believed technology could solve some of the continent’s everyday problems. The vision was bold, but the journey quickly showed that having a great idea is only the beginning. The solar-powered bus struggled to become a viable business. A Hult Prize judge reportedly estimated that $1 million would only be enough to buy a small fleet, highlighting just how expensive it could be to turn the concept into a scalable operation.

In its September 17 ruling, the court found no realistic path for Copia to return to operating as a going concern, and said extending the administration would only add delay and costs.
