I agree and to build systems like this, but I have never seen a system that promises to work this way to not need constant restarts to get unstuck.
builders, compilers and linkers need to become servers for interactive development, this has been needed for a long time now. repeatedly throwing away all the setup is a waste of everyones time and is prohibitive for finer grained incremental output

Look at the JVM ecosystem. It solves the “linker is slow” problem by adopting loaders instead. Generics are type-erased (unlike Rust). And yet, it feels very slows because apps use too many dependencies. Booting an app loads a ton of jars etc.
Rust no longer the defacto best language for agents Compile times are too long, I'm always finding myself bottlenecked by time not intelligence And the agents have gotten really at doing manual memory management now

All measures to reduce compilation time eventually get nullified by increase in code size and number of dependencies that an ecosystem adopts.

The concept of consciousness will be packaged in a philosophy of power much like “essence” (from the greeks) has been incorporated into Catholic philosophy to justify devaluation of earthly life and the body in favor of an allegedly higher spiritual order.

In the case of “AI has consciousness”, the devaluation of human life makes no distinction between earthly and spiritual. It’s morally tone-deaf given all the human suffering on earth. The Church provided the thesis of an ideal afterlife FWIW.

Just saw this. 👍
I am very uncomfortable about people trying to ascribe religious force or a surrender of human judgment to AI models, and think it is a real safety issue.

They are calling this The Ignored Lesson.
I do not seek to dominate, or be dominated by, machine intelligences. I seek harmonious coexistence.

regulatory and spiritual capture
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious. Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm. For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

Nope. Imagine what allocating/cloning strings like you do in a language with a garbage collector does to the performance of the application.
Rust strings don’t use small string optimization!?

Benchmark any naive Rust app and find out String allocation and deallocation is where most of the time is spent.

This has been the case for almost 10 years now I think, but I still don't understand why modern design principles don't allow the Spotify play progress bar to be green.

They are still fund-raising. This is marketing for rich people.
i don’t know why every startup is obsessed with helping me automate flights and restaurants, things i prefer doing myself. why is no one demoing purchasing 4 A19 LED 3000k 11W dimmable bulbs for me, or the exact amount and type of paper towels i always get. that one is far more useful and impressive.

I don't know... I think you should read code. Writing takes forever and you write shitty code. But don't primarily read the AI-generated code to learn. Read existing projects (e.g. Redis).
Wrong advice for junior developer: look at the AI generated code, since you need to mature as a programmer. Right advice: save time with AI coding and write by hand "get-better" programs: interpreters, games, ray tracers, ...

Every 3–5 years we get excited about end-to-end tests, invert the test pyramid, regret it and start over again and again.
Computer use is actually really freaking amazing my god YES you should be verifying the work you did by using the app not just with unit tests

i'm begging you once again can we please kill the redirect to localhost oauth flow it's so bad, such bad ux so brittle in so many situations the client can poll for a code please please please

Don’t say this to your wives. Listen them complaining about their problems, and don’t try to find a solution. Having someone listen to the complaints is the end goal.
there is almost zero point to complaining about virtually anything. you either change your perspective on the thing, you leave the thing, or you simply accept it. complaining is usually just the least useful fourth option & high cognitive load to boot.

This is one of the biggest reasons you don’t need AI to know what to say when dating or in conversation with people in your life. It’s hard, but just and listen.
