When I created Raspbian for the Raspberry Pi, I was excited to help bring low-cost compute into the hands of a next generation of tinkerers and programmers. However, I now despair that a Raspberry Pi can cost upwards of $300 because AI shortages are making personal computing unaffordable. Furthermore, bright young people are being discouraged from learning programming because they are being told it is now a commodity skill that AI will do. I have to ask myself what it was all for. Is this the future we were promised? If so, I'm starting to regret my part in it.

Google researcher @lauriewired warns the shift from C++ to Python in universities is creating programmers who don't understand how computers actually work: "When I was in college getting my CS degree, my year was one of the last years that was using C++ as the core language for teaching students. Actually they were switching over to Python of all languages." "One of the biggest issues that I have is that a lot of these higher level languages are really abstracting away what is happening under the hood. If you're not aware of how the computers work in general, then you're gonna have problems when it comes to debugging." "Starting with a language like C++ gives you the ability to do these really high level abstractions, but it also gives you the ability to customize your memory management and get really close to the underlying machine. Especially if you're trying to work in high performance computing, game development, or high frequency trading." "At C++ conferences, there's almost this fundamental anger response when it comes to mentioning something like C or C++. People start complaining about the complexity of it." @Google

having too many interests sounds like an advantage. until you realize the cost. you want to study: • math • physics • robotics • biology • design • business • philosophy so you start everything. and compound deeply in nothing. the da vinci curse by leonardo lospennato is about this problem. the enemy of the polymath is not lack of curiosity. it is fragmentation. you do not need to kill your interests. you need to organize them. → choose a central mission → let multiple disciplines feed it → go deep when the problem demands depth → stop confusing novelty with progress the goal is not to become ten different people. it is to make ten different interests converge into one coherent body of work.

My nephew, who is studying in his 2nd year of engineering (CS), called a while back to ask for help with applying for an internship. Along with the rest of the usuals, he asked to learn more about Git. I was a bit surprised - coming into 2nd year, students are still wary of using Git, and it's hurting them in internships and job offers. I recommended him this beautiful guide from Beej. beej.us/guide/bggit/ And he called today to share his enthusiasm and admiration for it. So here it is again - for all those students and folks getting their hands on Git.

Episode with Bjarne Stroustrup (Creator of C++) dropping Monday morning, excited to share it with you all! Some of the topics we went over: • What made Bell Labs different • Programming language design: types, memory safety, bootstrapping • When abstraction improves performance • Things he'd change in building C++ knowing what he knows today He shared a bunch of interesting stories that came from building C++, really enjoyed those and hope you do too As usual will be available on YouTube/Spotify/Apple Podcasts and I'll post about it here when it drops on Monday

Happy Birthday to Claude Shannon, known by many as the “father of Information Theory.” Shannon was an American mathematician and electrical engineer. In 1948, he published A Mathematical Theory of Communication, which effectively created the field.
