Four buttons: one to dictate, one for power and switching devices, and two you map to whatever you want. Single and multi-press. Enter, Spotlight, cmd+tab, whatever you want, without looking or reaching for the keyboard. Pace around instead of sitting at a desk. Untether yourself.

It's a prototype. It doesn't work perfectly everywhere yet. Not silent speech either: you still speak, and someone close might hear. But it already beats AirPods on low-volume dictation, unlocking workflows an ordinary mic can't.

Mario Kart. Hands-free. Stock Nintendo Switch. Tongue gestures and sips for steering, items, drifts. @NintendoAmerica Racing is the hardest continuous-control challenge we've thrown at the MouthPad^ — you can't let go of the wheel. Each genre we test reveals a different layer of input design. This one changed how we think about sustained control.

8.51 bits per second. No implant. No surgery. Tomás hit 8.51 BPS in a 60-second MouthPad^ benchmark using head-tracking + tongue clicks. Personal Best: 9.98 BPS. That rivals the best BCIs — at a fraction of the cost. From Tomás: "The mouthpad's a game-changer. It totally revolutionized how I use my computer."

Clear a cavern of enemies with your tongue, and rule all of your devices, hands-free. Watch our very own Aragorn play LOTR with the MouthPad^ — moving around with licks and attacking with tongue presses and sips. Gaming = the ultimate stress test for input devices. Fast feedback, high stakes, spatial navigation under pressure. This is what R&D looks like at @AugmentalTech.

“Humans are remarkably adaptable,” says Mike Hastings. It takes one to know one. A consultant for people with spinal cord injuries, Mike switched to the MouthPad^ this summer after 25 years with the trusty mouth stick. He’s mastered his device, using it every day — up to 16 hours a day — and even inspiring new features on the way. Check out Mike’s remarkable story and read his full review of the MouthPad^ on our new “Our Users” page: augmental.tech/our-users

We’re honored to share that the MouthPad^ has been featured in WIRED Japan! The June 2024 issue highlights the MouthPad^ as one of the key devices for spatial computing, alongside the Apple Vision Pro. From WIRED: “Resistant to fatigue and skilled in fine movements. MouthPad^ is an in-mouth trackpad that utilizes these characteristics of the tongue, shared by the finger. Encased in medical-grade resin, it incorporates a gyroscope and a touchpad to track the position of the tongue and the orientation of the head. It can be used as an input device for various devices. In a world where eye-tracking and hand gestures are mainstream, it offers a more accessible alternative.” Grab a copy of issue number 53 and stay tuned for updates on how the MouthPad^ is redefining human-computer interaction — and making it available for everyone. wired.jp/magazine/vol_53/

For Josh Basile, the MouthPad^ is a bridge — to family, friends, and old passions. “Within days, I am now playing chess again against friends, Wordle with my dad, and with my daughter, I can now play @PBS kids games and read digital books before her bedtime by flipping the pages hands-free.” “I’ve been missing chess for so long, and I got it back.” Josh, on the board of the @UnitedSpinal, is a trial attorney and founder of @SPINALpedia, the world's largest video mentoring platform for people with spinal cord injuries. He is the fifth-ever user of the MouthPad^ and an early tester and advocate for its new head-tracking feature. ”(The MouthPad^) is an amazing piece of technology that has given me so much new independence, without always having to use my voice to control everything,” he said. “As technology evolves, opportunities evolve.”

It was a “simple act,” says Esther Klang; but to her, it “meant the world.” “For the first time in my life, I was able to take pictures and videos,” Esther said, posting to LinkedIn. “The feeling of happiness, joy, and satisfaction I experienced when I took a picture and video for the first time cannot be described.” “Augmental’s Mouthpad has changed my life.” Esther is an accessibility tester and advocate for disability rights. The MouthPad^ allows her to maneuver the apps she tests on her phone and share her work with her community. “I post a lot on social media and the Mouthpad is helping me write more efficiently and be more productive,” she says. “I love taking pictures and videos to show and post.” Follow Esther’s journey at her website: estherswalkingjourney.co.

“It's given me a spark.” Keely Horch is a math and computer engineering student at @UMBC. She uses her MouthPad^ to code, draw equations, and take notes during lecture, where voice control is not an option. (And, most recently, to conquer the whole Augmental team at @settlersofcatan) “I’m excited about the future because of the independence I have now from the MouthPad^,” Keely says. “Being able to stay up late to do homework or play games, it gives me a sense of normalcy. “It's given me the motivation to want to take control of my life.”

With a heavy heart, the Augmental team mourns the sudden passing of @brookemellison, an advisor and dear friend to so many. Among countless impressive accolades, Brooke was a life-long champion of accessibility for people living with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities, giving every bit of her energy to bring about a more equitable world. Also serving on its Board of Directors, Brooke was the @UnitedSpinal Association’s VP of Technology & Innovation, where she helped startups like ours engage with the accessibility community. An expert in policy and ethics in health and science, Brooke dedicated her life to stem cell research advocacy, founding the non-profit The Brooke Ellison Project and running for the @NYSenate on a platform of education, healthcare, and funding for stem cell research. She wrote two books raising awareness about life with disability, including Miracles Happen (2002) and Look Both Ways (2020), the first of which was transformed into the movie “The Brooke Ellison Story” (2004). She was recognized by the World Economic Forum (@wef) as a Young Global Leader in 2014. The list goes on. Brooke was nothing short of a genius, whose care and righteous dedication were only surpassed by her kindness. From Augmental’s inception as a company, Brooke served as our North Star — brightly guiding the path toward more universally accessible technology. Brooke had been a power-user of a wireless tongue-based interface built in the ’90s, using it to control her computer mouse, wheelchair, and other devices. She had unlocked true freedom and purpose with the movement of her tongue. Although the company that created her Tongue Touch Keypad dissolved many years ago, Brooke had enlisted engineers to keep her intraoral interface running all this time — a testament to her resilience, and to the power of the tongue. Brooke attributed much of her success, including her PhD dissertation, to her tongue-based assistive technology. She was an ardent supporter of our mission at Augmental and we are forever grateful for her foundational inspiration and help. Her remarkable legacy and irreplaceable devotion will not be forgotten! It was a true privilege to have known her and felt her real impact on this world. May you rest peacefully, Brooke, and may your dream live on! Thank you for everything.
