Cross-platform engineer trying to make native app dev as pleasant as web dev

Tokyo-to, Japan
Pretty surreal to see @theo covering my article! I caught it live, so can assure it was a fun watch from my point of view. 🍿 Theo also caught the fact that React Native deploys to e-ink Kindles and PlayStations, which I overlooked! Tempted to add those to the addendum now 😄

ty for nerdsnipe. in the next version of Porffor, coroutines are now stackless resulting in async and generator microbenchmarks up to 24x faster and using up to 36x less memory!! (yes times not percent)
what about async? it compiles to stackless coroutines? and do we provide our runner based on epoll or something? or it's linking with libuv?

We are releasing React Native Skia version 3.0 which runs WebGPU by default. By moving away from the OpenGL-centric design, it allows for multithreading by default as well as deep integration with three.js, vision camera, and transformer.js piped.video/watch?v=L-PNQi1n…

Doesn't matter how smart your agent is, we all have to wait ten minutes for Gradle to sync

So tired of how bad Android Studio is at debugging code on-device. Usually takes me 30 minutes to get a debugger attached. Constant resyncing the Gradle project, waiting for loading spinners, and watching the debugger connection time out. Just over and over again.

Due to AI, I have disabled external pull requests on all my repos. Open source, as we have known it, was fun while it lasted. (It’s been 15 years for me) I will still maintain projects and handle issues.

React Native macOS 0.83 is here! 🥳 I'll be able to ship Expo Desktop starter templates based on newer React Native versions thanks to this. Thanks, Saad!

Most of my experience of debugging Swift with Xcode has been watching perpetual loading spinners and being unable to get any useful information about most symbols even once loaded. Developer experience is a major reason I got into NativeScript!
Breakpoint Swift with Chrome DevTools? You bet.

Angular Native is cool and all, but I'd rather write React Native apps using vanilla JS. One-shotted by Astra in 34 minutes

upm ahead-of-time compiled with Porffor! - ~4mb native binary - up to 50% faster than Node version with only ~15 minutes spent optimizing - identical source code (only node shims needed)
Introducing 📦upm: 🪶A fast, tiny package manager for the npm registry. ✨Written in TypeScript, it installs at native-class speed and has a JS API, at a fraction of the size of native tools. 🤝Compatible with your existing .npmrc and lockfiles. 👉 Try at upm [dot] sh

There was a success rate of just 30% in my batch when applying for permanent residency in Japan. For 19 months, I waited for my application to be processed, without a single status update, worrying that they’d reject it for some paperwork slip-up.
After months of preparation and waiting, I was given a letter from the Japanese government about my permanent residency. Unfortunately, it has been nothing more than a rude wake up call and a reminder of what I am here. I vented my thoughts out in this post. It's a tough day.

cool take for ahead-of-time JS! basically just the runtime but running the JIT at build-time with type information. limited payoff and have to fight the engine but easy compatibility. it's an interesting middle ground.
An early preview of experimental Bun + JSC with ahead-of-time compilation For Claude Code's CLI: 24% faster startup, 48% lower memory, 46% lower CPU, and nearly 2x larger binary size

It's rumored that only around six non-native speakers from outside the kanji-using world have passed Level 1 of Japan's Kanji Kentei. One is Bret Mayer, an American translator and kanji instructor in Hamamatsu who got hooked on Japanese via Dragon Ball. buff.ly/iMzYdDZ

I started out a decade ago developing my hobby iOS apps using Swift + UIKit. UIKit and Xcode were such a pain to develop in that I turned to React Native simply to improve the developer experience. Yes, I use cross-platform frameworks even for single-platform apps.
Humans were so bad at coding that companies had to use React Native because two native apps was just..too much. It was too much.
