I am very uncomfortable about people trying to ascribe religious force or a surrender of human judgment to AI models, and think it is a real safety issue.

A snapshot from the relatively "small" thunderstorm that moved over the Salton Sea on September 28th. The last sunlight still reached the cloud tops (just under 20,000 feet) 10 minutes after the sun had set locally at the Salton Sea (Photo: Sicco Rood).

Any compositor who looks at this and says I won't use a tool like this because it's AI is just stupid and self-sabatoging. There is nothing precious about green screen removal. There is nothing artistic about rotoscoping. It's painful, costly, time consuming grunt work that almost nobody enjoys. And if you happen to be someone that does, do it in your own free time. No employer wants to pay for your me roto time. Speaking as someone who has done literally hundreds of hours of roto, its about freaken time. x.lingyaoai.com/ltx_io/status/21060152…
The last drop of VFX Week: Alpha Gen (Beta). Give it an ordinary RGB clip and get back an alpha matte that matches your plate frame for frame. No green screen, no masks, no prompt. Built for the edges that are hard to key or roto: hair, fur, smoke, fire, glass, water. 🧵

The fact Anthropic thought it could convince Christian theologians that its programmers could create a machine with a soul is the only story you need to hear to know to avoid the IPO.

The statue of Prometheus is finally finished. It was cast in Paris, crossed the Atlantic, and was assembled at Starbase. It took us 100 days to go from nothing to this. People of the West, we have lived through an era devoid of dreams, devoid of destiny. But the time has come to reclaim our dream of antiquity. In a few months, we will start building a new city. It will be the most magnificent city in all of history. After all, the great dream of the West has always been to rebuild Rome. Come walk beside us in this endeavor. The world is waiting.

Our team sent a simple question to LA's Bureau of Engineering about a sewer line that's already permitted, so that we can get Certificate of Occupancy to get the homeowners moved in. They say they'll get back to us 10/27. This is what building housing in LA looks like.

Ben Thompson says Meta and Google are making more money using AI to improve their ads than the labs are from selling it: "The biggest monetization right now is probably not in Anthropic or OpenAI. It's the incremental gain that is happening for Google and Meta." "They can actually validate their image creation and their text creation in a way no one else can. Their validation is the ad marketplace, running a gazillion A/B tests to see what works. Most ads don't convert." "What do LLMs do? LLMs predict. We're going to move to this world where Meta is going to look at people and say, this person probably wants to see this next. And they're going to go find that thing and show it to them." "The potential upside in terms of just showing people better ads that are more relevant to them, they only need to increase a few percentage points for the returns to be billions and billions of dollars. This alone is worth them investing in being on the leading edge."
My conversation with @benthompson. Ben has been writing Stratechery for over a decade and remains one of my favorite business thinkers. We covered a lot. Every important company in the industry and the forces acting on all of them. - Why he thinks it would be problematic for the US to win the AI race - Will we run out of money to fund AI - Google becoming Berkshire Hathaway - Why ads are amazing - TSMC, Intel, and Samsung - Nvidia's invisible price cuts + biggest competitors - Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, and Meta I love talking to Ben about everything happening in markets and technology. Teresa Torres wants to believe every product team does careful synthesis after each customer interview. The reality? It's hard, so teams give up and grab the two or three things they remember most. "We're not competing with making good synthesis faster. We're competing with making shallow synthesis better." That realization reshaped the approach: if product teams won't do the deep work, maybe the software should do it for them. 👉 Find a link to the full episode here: Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/63c… Apple Podcast: buff.ly/RbDqrGW YouTube: piped.video/watch?v=zverZHvd…
