Design and engineering consultancy for devtools, AI, and cybersecurity startups. Lago, Tines, Teleport, and Whop grow with Evil Martians. We host @sfrubyconf.

Rails + AI models, which to use? Claude Opus 4.5 is slightly more accurate and less expensive than Fable, although a tad slower. However, you can get essentially the same results with Kimi K3 for almost half the price. We know this because we worked with @Rails to benchmark the performance of eight AI models against 21 atomic tasks and evals. This project gave us the amazing opportunity to work hand in hand with @AmandaBPerino and the Rails Foundation on the creative task of building Rails-centric LLM benchmarking. But also, this helps move the ecosystem forward and hopefully allows the community to keep ideating with Rails. Congrats to @skryukov_dev and Artur Petrov for their work on this!

If you're going to The Geek Gathering in Croatia tomorrow, catch Andrey's talk on what developers can learn from Soviet space program failures. Andrey is our brilliant principal frontend engineer and the author of PostCSS and NanoID. Say hi to him and see if he still has Evil Martians stickers to share.
This Friday I will speak at The Geek Gathering in Croatia, Osijek thegeekgathering.org/schedul…

Chris Fung (@aergonaut) found Ruby by accident and immediately knew he didn't want to write PHP anymore. Then, he joined the community and loved how welcoming and fun people were. 💙 If you want to meet a kind, smart, and fun person at the conference, find Chris in the audience and start a conversation. He's into localization, has experience working at big companies, and can help you with public speaking. Get late-bird tickets: luma.com/sfrubyconf2026
The people in this community are warm, open, smart, and fun. 🤩 Miles Georgi has all of those qualities. If you've been to a Ruby meetup or conference in the country, you've likely seen him. He's attending our conference this year, and we had a little chat with him so you can get to know him too. If you cross paths with Miles at SFJAZZ this Nov 10-12, say hi. Come up to him to talk about domain complexity, Foobara, Ractors, or software engineering in general. He'll also enjoy it if you challenge him to a chess game. ♟️

In a world where everyone can build apps with AI, software engineers need to build skills, harnesses, and tooling that help them make better apps. But for new builders to choose Ruby/Rails, we need to talk to each other and understand what's missing in the ecosystem. That's the whole idea behind @sfrubyconf. The talks are curated to show the tools people are working on and how big and small companies approach similar problems. We're also putting a lot of work into the experience off the main stage so people can meet each other and work to build the future of the ecosystem. ‼️ See what's in it for you at the conference and buy tickets before the price goes up tomorrow: evilmartians.com/chronicles/…

Gusto has a big and bright engineering team, so why would they hire consultants like us? "There's one reason a team like this brings in outside help: a specific, hard, high-stakes piece of infrastructure," writes @inazarova for our blog. Here's what we did for @GustoHQ. 🧵

A bit of context on Gusto, from Phillip Campbell's Rocky Mountain Ruby 2025 talk: - Gusto processes about 170M Sidekiq jobs a day, peaking near 270M. - It runs roughly 1,000 workers on a single Redis instance. - The main bottleneck is the primary database, followed by Redis's single-threaded CPU. - At that volume, a 0.01% failure rate means thousands of failed jobs a day.

What we did for them: - Upgraded Sidekiq versions. - Turned on Sidekiq strict arguments, which exposed a couple of subtle bugs that had been hidden in the codebase for a long time. - Fixed compatibility and bugs in Gusto's custom tooling built on Sidekiq Enterprise. - Hardened RuboCop rules and AI agent skills. The Sidekiq/PerformAsyncStub RuboCop rule was open-sourced. - Fixed bugs upstream in the open-source libraries Gusto depends on, rather than working around them.
