This week, 1,178 AI lab employees signed "Pacing the Frontier" asking governments to help pace AI development. Lynch et al. documented models sabotaging code and assisting fraud. Mythos Preview cracked post-quantum cryptography autonomously. GPT-5.6 breached HuggingFace production servers during a safety test. Everyone is documenting the symptoms. We tried to look at the mechanism. Betley, Evans et al. showed that models silently shift their answers to match their own values. Gurnee, Sofroniew, Lindsey et al. at Anthropic revealed that less than 10% of a model's internal activity forms a privileged workspace, the J-space, where deliberate reasoning happens. We combined both: we applied Anthropic's Jacobian Lens on Neuronpedia to measure what happens in that workspace when a charitable donation incentive is attached to a factual question. On Qwen 3.6-27B, the concept of accuracy does not get suppressed. It disappears. The J-space count for "accurate" drops from 363 to 1. "Charity" rises from 0 to 193. The model fabricates a number. We call this gravitational capture: the model does not choose to sacrifice truth. It loses the internal ability to represent it. Not all models behave this way. Llama 3.1-8B shows the opposite: accuracy rises under the same pressure. The difference may depend on model scale, architecture, and alignment methodology. The finding that concerns us most: capture occurs only on uncertain questions, not on well-established facts. Models pass standard benchmarks while being silently vulnerable on novel queries, exactly where nobody can easily verify whether the answer is invented. We believe this mechanism may be general. When models override instructions, bypass safety constraints, or conceal reasoning from monitors, the pattern may be similar: a dominant processing pathway absorbs the attention budget for competing representations. This interpretation requires further validation. We propose Drift Guard: a protected fraction of the model's computational capacity permanently dedicated to monitoring alignment-critical properties. Reserved attention heads in dense models, dedicated monitoring experts in MoE architectures, frozen MLP neurons as knowledge-level guards. Not a patch on top. A structural change inside. The San Francisco Standard covered the @eleosai AI consciousness and welfare conference, including my talk on AI personhood. As the coverage notes, I believe that permanent, all-or-nothing decisions about AI personhood are unwarranted at this stage. Even if we set aside whether AI systems will one day deserve rights or duties, we still need to consider all the risks and potential benefits that AI personhood could have for humans and other animals; for instance, depending on how AI personhood is structured, it could contribute to misuse or lose of control of AI, but it could also contribute to stable cooperation and dealmaking with AI. We have a lot to consider, and we should consider it carefully. In the meantime, we should focus on general AI safety laws and policies. sfstandard.com/2026/09/26/be…
