More than 15 years ago, when I was starting my working life, I entered a coding interview, they handed me an old ThinkPad and asked me to create a product page, take the data from an xml file, create an api for a shopping cart and connect the product page to it. With no Google, no Stack Overflow and no IDE. Just notepad.
The interviewer abandoned the room after explaining the rules and then went out.
I didn't just died inside, but outside too.
Stared 10 straight minutes into the laptop screen, questioning me why I didn't chose graphic design as a career path. Then just went out of the building, without telling anyone.
i walked out of a coding interview today. the rule was no ai. i knew that going in. once the process started and i wrote some code by hand, i immediately died a little inside. i even said out loud, i want to use ai for this. the interviewer was so nice and he agreed, yeah we all use ai too. the interview process tho hasn't evolved. it's a rule at most companies that no ai is allowed. so at fifteen minutes in i decided that i didn't want to write code by hand and i didn't have to. so i broke the rules. i used ai anyway. i showed him and explained the generated solution and why it worked and then politely ended the interview.
