Were you ill served by an autism or chronic illness diagnosis/self-identification as a teen/young adult? I’d love to talk for a potential story focused on young women and disability identity and I want to capture diverse experiences. DM or email sluterman at 19thnews dot org

I've been a reporter for a long time and this might be the strangest thing I've ever done. We've been reporting on privatization of schools this year and found that just about anyone can open a private school in most states. Could reporters do it? propublica.org/article/propu…

A 17-month-old girl was hospitalized with E. coli after consuming raw milk. Soon, another child — a 6-year-old girl who’d drunk milk from the same farm — would wind up in the same San Diego hospital, with the same potentially fatal illness. propublica.org/article/calif…

Sen. Tommy Tuberville recently went on an unhinged rant about how "many airline pilots" are "part of the furry community." He wasn't totally wrong — there ARE a surprisingly high number of furries in aviation, and the reasons why are super interesting! I investigated for @WIRED:

I only know one person my age who cut off his parents and it was for a very good reason. I realize that’s not necessarily a representative sample but the articles about the epidemic of parental estrangement also only have anecdotes. So.

Like… I’m just not convinced this is a widespread problem. Maybe in some really specific kinds of bubbles?

I have a diagnosed developmental disability that makes me bad at social interaction and it turns out I’m actually more social than most Americans. Huh.

I disagree with @emmma_camp_ about the autism of it all but you really can (and should) just do things.

I cannot understand why the MAHA Summit denied so many press credentials, especially with so many U.S. govt officials on stage. @foodfixco applied and was granted credentials, but the press area was largely empty and our movement was restricted so I left.

Hello from the MAHA Summit. A number of reporters denied credentials despite empty press seats. A security guard first said he needed to escort me everywhere but now has given up I guess.

This is such an interesting shift from the classic “welfare queen” stereotype.
You pay taxes to cover welfare for people who just choose not to work. That’s why I launched a welfare-to-work requirement. If you’re young, healthy, and get government assistance, you should work, go to school, or volunteer.

just love it when the piece you reported out for months gets read word for word by someone looking into their front facing camera who then gets ad revenue from it
people have said it before but the whole shortform video / youtube / podcast content industry is so extractive of actual newsroom labor, and as far as I can tell very few of those studios have hard news operations, reporters / checkers / researchers...
