We really can't fathom how crazy it was to find another continent on the other side of the ocean full of millions of people and thriving civilizations. Imagine if we landed humans on the dark side of the moon in 1969 and there was a billion people living there in a moonopolis
New episode with military historian Si Sheppard. The conquests of the Aztec and Inca empires might be the most shocking events in human history. Hernan Cortés and some hundreds of Conquistadors landed on a new continent they knew basically nothing about, and within 2 and a half years, conquered the 6 million strong Aztec empire. Then, a decade later, Francisco Pizarro did the same thing to an Incan Empire of some 10 million inhabitants. In both cases, the Conquistadors consistently beat native armies while being literally 100x (or even in some cases 1000x) outnumbered - and in many cases, did so without taking a single casualty. And they did this with 99% of their military forces being made up of the very natives they were trying to subjugate. We often forget how wild human history is. People talk about AI takeover as if it would be some crazy, unprecedented sci-fi outcome. But this would not be the first time an alien force whose motives the defenders barely understand use more advanced technology and diplomatic cunning to outmaneuver and then take over a much larger and long established existing order. 0:00:00 – Cortés’s conquest of the Aztecs 0:22:39 – Pizarro’s conquest of the Inca 0:26:59 – Explaining Conquistador military superiority 0:34:39 – Could the natives have beat the Conquistadors? 0:48:56 – The Aztecs and Incas did not learn from each other 0:56:11 – Why Spain still lost in the long run 1:07:47 – Why didn’t the Aztecs/Incas adapt better to European warfare? 1:14:16 – Conquistador motivation 1:26:22 – Why Mughal India also couldn't play the Europeans off each other 1:33:42 – Diplomacy was just as important as technology

Yes we had a 5.5 release last week, but what about a second one?
Introducing Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in the Claude 5.5 family. It’s a clear upgrade over Sonnet 5, runs more than 30% faster, and costs up to 30% less for most work.

We didn't start the scaling. Nine years of AI, from "Attention" to Opus 5.5, as an anime opening. It's one of six genres on the album, each with its own music video, and a mini-site to explain every reference. Links below 👇

The lyrics, the catchy tune, the breathtaking visuals, I'm awed.

that’s pretty cool! i also gave it a try with a different style direction and the result (after a few rounds of tweaking) is impressive

after Opus 5.5 it actually hurts to look at anything GPT 6 Astra designs gave both models the exact same prompt: "make a dynamic 15-second motion graphics video that shows what an incredible motion designer you are, like it's your showreel for a résumé. go all out." not even close, see for yourselves. GPT is honestly terrible here, openai just has awful taste

Fixing Claude's writing was pivotal to reducing gradual disempowerment. Lack of understanding made us all cede decision-making to Claude because we couldn't even understand what it's saying.

Not only is Opus 5.5 much more token efficient, we've also lowered the costs!

Opus 5.5 requires less compute to serve than Opus 5, and its pricing reflects that. Our tests show that at default settings it will cost 40% less than Opus 5 on typical workloads.

It's been a while since I've been this excited about a model, it writes better, it writes smarter, it writes shorter, and it's a pleasure to talk to. Bust most important of all, it codes well. It's a good model, sir.

At its default effort setting, Opus 5.5 delivers frontier results for a fraction of the cost per task, often beating other models running at their highest settings. It also generates output more than 30% faster than Opus 5.

It is widely known that our most goated Claudes end in .5 increments. Welcome to the world Opus 5.5!
Introducing Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in our new Claude 5.5 family. It performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 for most tasks, and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5.

We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.
