These new hands are the perfect companion for Atlas. With 13 degrees of freedom, they are directly actuated, built for high fidelity simulation to enable sim-to-real RL, and designed from the ground up for dexterous physical work. Directly actuated plus sim-first is the right order. I wonder how closely the sim hand's contact model tracks the real one once the thing is gripping a part with oil on it. That would be interesting to see.

yo @BostonDynamics can your robot survive a drop from 1 or 2 floors? if not. can you make them instinctually protect vital components if they ever fell from such height? some parts are replacable. others are not.

I need that c3po button up. Slick my man.

13 degrees of freedom. somewhere, a stuck drawer is unimpressed.

Good job, but you need five fingers. Keep the innovations of degrees of freedom but shrink the technology so the robot can have five fingers. You’ll thank me later for this

the second comment is the real question tho like when can i preorder one to unload my dishwasher

wait until you find out you need 5 fingers 😂

Why haven't I seen anyone do robot hands with a little of compressible surface material, we don't have these hard surface fingers and hands, that's what allows to more easily adapt to any shape we grab. Is there anyone trying this?

You mentioned that the hand is almost like a mini robot in of itself. Are you guys thinking of it as a sub-agent of the body as this viewpoint might offer new insights?

Atlas's missing pinky was decided by engineers taping theirs for a day.

Dexterous hands are impressive. Knowing exactly where those hands are in the world, down to the centimeter, is what makes them useful! 🤖🛰️

i want the awkward stuff in these tests. wet packaging, tangled cables, objects that slip

Why not 5 fingers?

Atlas looking really cool lately. When will we start seeing them in the workplace?

In less than ten years, I'll see him picking up a penny off the ground with two fingers. 😯

Is is harder to do sim-to-real w only 4 fingers

The hand should be the same size of human hand, with flexibility of the disconnected joints and elastics skin. What I see is box with five fingers. Boston Dynamics is living is wonderland and produce zero valuable products.

13 degrees of freedom and i already know the first real-world test is a pickle jar somebody's dad gave up on.

The decision to eliminate that pinkie finger will come back to haunt the engineers later. Tesla's Optimus (and other robot manufacturers) will be ready for total compatibility with the real human-centric world with 5-fingers per hand humanoid robots.

Atlas is jerky. Don't know if it's their actuators or what. Combined with the 360 head & waist it's pure nightmare fuel. Then you have their recent screed about how it's better if you don't have a real hand 🤪 Company has been lighting money on fire for 20 years. Google couldn't believe their luck when Hyundai came along... I suspect they were planning to write it off.

Hands are not just grippers. More than half the time they are feet and hammers...

Incredible. Not a lot of people understand the importance of dexterity.

Önceki Atlas eli 7 serbestlik derecesindeydi; yenisi 13’e çıktı ama serçe parmak yok — ekip bir gün kendi serçe parmaklarını yüzük parmaklarına bantlayıp denemiş. Eklemlerde kablo yok, doğrudan tahrik; simülasyondan gerçeğe RL aktarımı için eli yüksek doğrulukla modelleyebilsinler diye.

13 DOF direct-drive hands designed around sim-to-real RL — dexterity has always been gated by the sim gap more than the hardware. Curious how these handle deformable objects like fabric or cables.

The drill trigger has to be a momentary contact, but a lock-on is allowed if the same finger or fingers can shut it off in one motion, per 29 CFR 1926.300(d)(2).

exactly. the hand is where humanoids get real. atlas went from 7 to 13 degrees of freedom, lost the pinky, and learned superhuman grips in simulation. the card breaks down the engineering
