Learning Vim in 2007 is one of those investments I rarely think about now, but had paid dividends for nearly two decades. Even in the age of AI, I still think it’s worth learning.

Well said!
When I started programming in the early 90s, people thought it was stupid and that I should become a doctor or a lawyer, not a weird nerd. Years later, they told me it was clear that somebody from India or the Philippines would take my job for $2/hour. When that didn't happen, no-code solutions were coming after me. Programming was dead! Now, Codex, then Copilot, then ChatGPT. AI is clearly on the brink of replacing me! The demand for programmers has never been higher before. Today, in the age of AI, few things will make you more valuable than knowing how to write software. Do you want superpowers for the next 20 years? Learn to code.

The current AI revolution is as significant, if not more so, than the Internet revolution of the 90s. Unlike the early Internet, which was guided by a relatively small group of people, the AI revolution has the full weight of the Internet behind it. Things are going to move fast.

Black holes are so cool.
Curious about black holes? If you could look at a black hole that’s pulling in material, you would see thin rings of light at the edge of the black hole’s shadow. They are actually multiple, highly distorted images of its accretion disk. Learn more: universe.nasa.gov/black-hole…

ALT This movie shows a complete revolution around a simulated black hole and its accretion disk following a path that is perpendicular to the disk. The black hole’s extreme gravitational field redirects and distorts light coming from different parts of the disk, but exactly what we see depends on our viewing angle. The greatest distortion occurs when viewing the system nearly edgewise. Credit: NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center/Jeremy Schnittman

This is great. The irony is that you often come off as more knowledgeable and confident when you do this. The key is to follow up with concrete steps on how you will bridge this gap in knowledge.
who knew it took 10 years of being a programmer before you can say "I don't know" in a meeting without feeling that hot flash of panic

Yep, I’ve also noticed some errors in math calculations I’ve given it.

I’ve been using #ChatGPT a lot over last 24 hours and thinking how it affects education. I give it a year, two years tops, before schools will need to implement specific policies to deal with AI-generated homework.

Got my HS Python students coding in VS Code using Docker and dev containers. So far so good, but definitely got my fingers crossed 🤞 #DockerInTheClassroom

As an “early” web guy, this is a trip down memory lane.

Just reminiscing about how hard custom fonts were on the web in the late 2000s. Cufón anyone?
