A self-portrait taken on the set of FULL METAL JACKET using my Rolleiflex's self-timer in 1986.
Although never spoken in the film, Private Joker's real name is J.T. Davis (as seen on the back of his PT sweats). He was named after Specialist James T. Davis, the first U.S. casualty of the Vietnam War. He was killed in action on December 22, 1961.

Vision Quest is still my favorite movie of yours. I was a high school wrestler back then. Great story, acting and soundtrack from that movie.

Wait a minute Matt: No, Specialist 4 James T. Davis was not the first overall American casualty of the Vietnam War, but he holds a specific and highly significant historical distinction. J.T. Davis was Army, characters in the movie were Marine Corps.

Stanley had me record the creed to a click track - a metronome cadence used to keep us all in sync. Everyone in the shot wore a little earpiece on a radio frequency so they could hear the recorded playback.
