A self-portrait taken on the set of FULL METAL JACKET using my Rolleiflex's self-timer in 1986.
Although never spoken in the film, Private Joker's real name is J.T. Davis (as seen on the back of his PT sweats). He was named after Specialist James T. Davis, the first U.S. casualty of the Vietnam War. He was killed in action on December 22, 1961.

The Rifleman's Creed in FULL METAL JACKET.
Stanley had me record the creed to a click track - a metronome cadence used to keep us all in sync. Everyone in the shot wore a little earpiece on a radio frequency so they could hear the recorded playback.

While shooting CUTTHROAT ISLAND in Malta, I brought my 16mm camera to make a black-and-white short film. When the production blew up the pirate ship, I captured the massive explosion. This was one of the last big-budget studio films to rely almost entirely on practical in-camera effects and stunts. Regardless of its initial reception, making this film was the adventure of a lifetime.
This is from a recent scan of my original camera negative.

81 years ago, the world changed forever. I've spent time telling stories about the human cost of nuclear weapons, on screen and off, and the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are still teaching us what's at stake. As their voices grow fewer, it's on all of us to carry their testimony forward. Join me and @nti_wmd this week in honoring the Hibakusha, so Nagasaki remains the last. #NoMoreHiroshimas

Jonathan Demme's MARRIED TO THE MOB had an early post-credits scene where Michelle Pfeiffer and I dance along the steps of the NY State Supreme Court building at 60 Centre Street in lower Manhattan. Michelle slipped on some ice and fell backwards over a railing. Thankfully I was quick enough to catch her legs before her head hit the concrete.

Journey’s “Only the Young” plays as Louden Swain runs across multiple bridges spanning the Spokane River during the opening credits of VISION QUEST. For anyone who’s ever faced a personal challenge, it doesn’t get much better than the 'Six Minutes' speech in VISION QUEST. This scene wasn’t in the 1979 novel by Terry Davis. Elmo's monologue was written specifically for the film by screenwriter Darryl Ponicsan (THE LAST DETAIL, TAPS). Actor J. C. Quinn absolutely knocks it out of the park here.
If you’d like to support the @FMJDiary project, you can bid on an original poster below. I signed and inscribed it with Elmo’s iconic line: “It ain't the six minutes... it's what happens in that six minutes.”

On the set of FULL METAL JACKET with R. Lee Ermey in 1985. Since we shot the film in reverse (Vietnam in ’85 and Boot Camp in ’86), Lee was serving as technical advisor here. Actor Tim Colceri was originally cast to play Gunnery Sgt. Hartman. Fortunately for audiences (and unfortunately for Tim), Lee convinced Stanley that he was the real deal and replaced Colceri. Thankfully you can still see Tim as the helicopter door gunner in the “Get some” scene.

My character's description from the Duffer Brothers' original 2015 pitch deck for MONTAUK (later renamed #StrangerThings). I worked with the Duffers to turn "Agent One" into the character of Dr. Brenner that we see on screen. They originally envisioned him more like "Keys" in E.T. - unshaven, flannel shirt, and work boots. I suggested he be meticulously clean, have white hair, and wear a suit reminiscent of Cary Grant in NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

My uncle, Captain Wylder Modine, was a real B-17 "Flying Fortress" pilot during WWII. After returning from a bombing mission, he got hit by anti-aircraft fire and almost had his right arm taken off. He had his crew bail, but his co-pilot was shot up really bad and couldn’t parachute, so my uncle, with one arm, landed the heavily damaged B-17 in a field behind enemy lines. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart. I talked with him before making MEMPHIS BELLE in 1989. He gave me his dress uniform to wear in the film and said, “when you put that on, don't disrespect it.”

I’m often asked about the pegboard scene in VISION QUEST. That was all me. No stunt doubles or safety measures. I trained for a long time and had to climb it several times to get all the angles. The “trick” is not to over extend, so you’d be pulling up your entire body weight. You have to keep it compact. Arms and elbows tight. 💪🏽
