Just to update this chart: 1) AI salience has increased dramatically in the past week - increasing as much in the last week as the previous year combined 2) 80% of voters think it's either very or somewhat likely that AI will cause widespread job loss in the five to ten years 3) 64% of voters think it's either very or somewhat likely that AI could pose a threat to humanity's survival 4) Large bipartisan majorities back immediate government action on AI even when primed about risk from China
Excited to be on Odd Lots to talk about the politics of AI. AI today is less important than it will ever be. Over the past year, AI rose in issue importance faster than any issue we track — it's now more important to voters than climate change, child care, and abortion.

Interesting volunteer-reported data from our latest PauseCon: AI pause appears to be a bipartisan issue. Caveat that this is from a small sample of 42 Congressional Office meetings. 66% of Democratic offices and 38% of Republican offices were supportive of Pause-style AI regulation. This is based on feedback from our volunteers, who met with their Congressional Offices on September 14th and 15th. 31% of Republicans and 28% of Democrats were neutral. 31% of Republicans and 7% of Democrats were opposed. Democrat responses were consistent across the House and Senate, but the Republicans were a different story. In the Senate, a 57% majority supported Pause-like regulation, and 43% opposed, with zero neutrals. In the House, a 67% majority of Republicans were neutral, with the rest evenly divided in support and oppose. This was a small sample, but the story from this data is that Republicans are roughly evenly split across Support, Neutral, and Oppose, whereas Democrats have a Support supermajority. The Senate appears to be more AI risk aware than the House. This is specifically for Pause-style AI regulation, so we assume that the support for any regulation overall is higher. — Methodology: On September 14th and 15th, PauseAI US volunteers met with 42 Congressional Offices, 29 Democratic and 13 Republican. After the meetings our volunteers filled out a survey were they assessed the Office’s position on Pause-style regulation on AI.

We’re hearing about AI loss of control incidents almost daily. This time the targets were US government websites like the Department of Education, Census Bureau, and SEC. Congress must take action to protect the American people, doing nothing right now is wildly irresponsible.

Democratic-socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders and MAGA loyalist Steve Bannon rarely find themselves on the same side of an issue. But concerns about AI have created some unlikely political common ground. This week, both appeared at the Pro-Human Assembly in Washington, D.C., where they warned about the risks of unregulated AI growth and called for stronger guardrails to keep the technology under human control. Here’s how the fight over AI is bringing political opposites together, in one minute.

On Monday, September 14, PauseAI US demonstrated outside the State Department in support of an international treaty to pause AI. Our demonstration happened days after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned to warn the public, and ahead of the Trump–Xi summit, where we hope the world's leaders will intimate talks on an international treaty to reign in reckless Ai development We are making available photos for the media to use for free, no permission or attribution required. These big AI companies should be held civilly and/or criminally liable and prosecuted when their models hurt people. They don’t get a free pass just because they’ve now decided to admit to the dangers of what they’ve created.

More pictures from our protest yesterday. We had a lot of great handmade signs with a clear, simple message: AI Treaty Now!
Today we held a demonstration at the State Department in Washington D.C. in support of a U.S.-led international treaty to pause AI. Things are changing fast. The public is realizing the enormous danger of building Artificial Intelligence. Congress is preparing to act. The American people are on our side. There is much reason for hope. We're proud of our volunteers who showed up, and of everyone on earth who will help humanity avert an AI catastrophe and pause AI now.

This week, loss of control has been on everyone's mind, including OpenAI's. Less discussed is that OpenAI already has a legally binding framework for managing loss-of-control risk... one that hasn't even been mentioned in their last three model cards.

Such an inspiring event. AI safety is an 80-20 issue. It is obvious to most people that creating machines that are more intelligent than us is dangerous, and we should not do it. I'm optimistic that our government will lead, and we will get an international treaty to pause AI.
