going 100 MPH is sometimes necessary if you are in an urgent rush but it burns a lot more energy than going 65 MPH to travel the same distance. we buy cars mostly for their 65 MPH skill, knowing they can get to 100 MPH as needed. it's also a lot less safe to go 100 MPH. yes, this is an allegory for AI and hybrid local + cloud inference compute.

favorite example from today was a startup CEO who built a Quiet Quitting Tracker that assigns a probability that sales rep is on the way out based off of Slack+Salesforce activity and quantifies the potential revenue impact of their departure
what are some of the cool things yall are doing with perplexity computer? f-ing around this weekend.

We’re open sourcing a benchmark and full evaluation harness for deep and wide research. Wide research is a particularly valuable feature for researching hundreds to thousands of entities across the web (or internally), building spreadsheets, and more. Hope this helps others build similar search and research evals for their own organizations.

“It is in America’s interest to actually support open source" - @AravSrinivas when I asked him yesterday about Washington’s fear of Chinese open AI models His view: Nvidia/Nemotron can help close the gap, but the US should support open weights because affordability is what lets businesses use AI.
Scoop: Talk has begun circulating around town that the White House may be considering a possible executive order on open-source AI, sparked by fears about Chinese dominance, nine people familiar told me, @BrendanBordelon, @delizanickel and @meredithllee

Knowledge work is compressing -- executives can act as ICs to unilaterally push the business forward and employees can level-up their impact with the leverage of 100 digital co-workers. This is enabled by real-time feedback loops between research, setting objectives and execution. But it all has to start with the best research, the perennial killer app for AI.
We're integrating Deep Research as a native skill inside Computer. It now connects to the agent harness that powers Computer, with access to search as code generation, long running sandboxes, connectors, tools, and licensed data. Available now to Pro and Max subscribers.

I went to the Main Street AI Summit in DC, hosted by Perplexity. Here's a full summary + my biggest takeaways, talk by talk: The thesis of the whole day: AI is a business multiplier for SMBs. Size matters less than it ever has. *** 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: @dmitry140 (@perplexity_ai) The line between startup and small business is disappearing. A solo founder now gets the leverage that used to take a 50-person team. My favorite line: "𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘦... You used to have to give instructions... now you prompt OBJECTIVES." *** 𝗦𝗕𝗔 𝗞𝗲𝘆𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲: @hartleycaldwell (@SBAgov) $25M in AI credits going to 100,000 vetted small businesses. $250 in Perplexity credits to each SMB. My favorite line: "𝘞𝘦'𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘴. A house flipper, a marketing agency, and a Napa logistics company, all running leaner and faster with AI than they ever did with headcount. AI allows you to be a human being, not a Human do'er." My favorite line from Josh Hart: "I saw a Perplexity Ad, created an account, then I stayed up until 3am and built my first website. That's the whole reason @doolaHQ exists. You shouldn't need an SSN, a US address, a plane ticket or a massive team to own and run a real US company. and AI makes that more true. a lot of modern comms boils down to 1) create content that influencers you like will amplify 2) make it easy for influencers to create content you like and conceptualize 'influencer' and 'content' in the broadest sense

David and Jordan are the perfect team to unleash a golden age of American robotics. Great people that are easy to root for - which is a good thing because we are all kind of screwed if they flop.
Westmag is building American robot actuators and drone motors at scale. In 2025, @westmagco raised $11M led by @a16z, with participation from @FoundersFund, @LuxCapital, NFDG, @MenloVentures, and other top investors. Since then, we’ve been building industrial capacity, crawling up supply chains, and securing high-volume customers. Now, we’re ramping production at our factory in South San Francisco to deliver against committed offtake orders from high-volume customers. Westmag is committed to scaling quickly in the US to deliver millions of drone motors and robot actuators to the surging domestic and global market. We’re building the great American motor and actuator company.
