It’s not always correct to neglect higher order terms. Tweets don't represent my employer. I follow a lot of people I dislike (not you though).

Underappreciated cause of lib-left fighting on here is that the 80th percentile MAGA member is still dumb as a bag of rocks and the modal conversation with them is like dragging your face across cement. Very rare to find a lib as useless to talk to as the average rightoid

Something that gets missed when this comes up is that in the heavily populated parts of the Americas, much of the vulnerability to disease also came from the severe societal disruption experienced. Many of the very damaging plagues were from (probably) endemic diseases
you know how native americans were utterly anhiliated by european diseases they have no immune response to? how come the europeans didnt catch native american diseases in the same way

I don’t want to overstate the point, novel diseases wreaked havoc and move ahead of actual European expansion oftentimes. Just that the syndemic aspects absolutely should be remembered as well.

Not sure these are actually the best nine but I started naming greats until I ran out of space
No. 6 plastic death just should be "the first glass beach album" but for some reason they didn't have that. I actually hate plastic death. Tried to pick one album of every genre. Not necessarily my favorite now, but the one that introduced me to that world

If you're a professor and write about AI you should publish the knock down argument that renders Claude's consciousness impossible and go down as this century's Gettier.
The probability that Claude is conscious is the same as the probability that Anna Karenina is conscious. Zero. Period. But inviting religious scholars to a series of meetings to instil the idea that Claude might be conscious and deserve moral status is not just wrong. If it were merely wrong, we would all be laughing at it. The problem is that it is very dangerous. Because granting AIs moral standing opens the door to trade-offs between human lives and AI “welfare”. Assign each AI even a tiny moral weight and add those weights across enough copies: you can end up justifying the sacrifice of human lives for machines. We should strongly push back against the idea that Claude might be conscious.

Looking at the current debates about Anthropic makes me feel guilty for not keeping up with some academic domains. I honestly had no idea that we'd solved consciousness, and determined which substrates can and can't support it. Thought that one was more up in the air.

Having to simultaneously read awful reasoning about the death penalty (from both sides) and presence of consciousness (from both sides) is going to be what finally ends me

Cool thread with a masterful use of the argumentative form “I already know the obvious objection to my argument, and for that reason alone I can dismiss it”
Just to point out the obvious, AI cultists believe a LLM thinks because first of all they think of *themselves* as machines.

I'm not saying this is a good argument (it isn't) but I'm surprised I haven't seen someone try arguing "LLMs operate on a fixed vocabulary, unlike humans, and therefore aren't conscious". Perhaps it requires knowing more about LLMs than the hip-firers usually possess?

You can tell when someone has actually understood the hard problem etc. because they’re like a timid abused child when it comes to Philosophy of Mind questions, curling up in a corner and hoping no one asks them to speak decisively. Confidence comes from the untraumatized.

i have heard several; what im missing is a convincing arguments that LLMs are not conscious and humans are.

"They're doing this because they want to get away with Watergate" is the obvious takeaway but they're also doing this because they're terrified of investigations leading to the effective end of the administration.

Hilarious to still try to pull the “Kamala will force us into a war” in defense of the guy who actively started the war you’re claimed they’ll force you to take part in

I think ultimate ensemble theory might, arguably at least, get around this but it gets confusing fast. Both in itself and in light of indexical truths, like “I am @seashelljulia”. But at the very least the question and answer both get more subtle.
Any serious worldview admits brute facts. Every explanation must terminate in a brute fact, regress through an infinite chain, or justify its explanans by the very explanandum it was invoked to explain. This is Agrippa's Trilemma. No system escapes it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%B…
