great take about why machines obviously can be conscious.
You're gonna hear a lot of people arguing more and more about whether machines can be conscious or not. By next year it will be drowning out the airwaves because we'll have AI employees everywhere. I'll give you a simple rule to know which side you're on. I've spent fifty years reading all the philosophers, and a bunch of holy works. Nobody has ever understood a damn thing about consciousness. Anyone speaking with authority on it is bluffing hard. I can tell you this, though: Every single person who thinks that machines cannot be conscious, is making an argument that humans are special. Everything they say just boils down to blah blah blah, "nooo, we're special." From there it's just rationalization. It became obvious to me many years ago that there's nothing special about us. If an identical planet exists somewhere else in the universe, it's going to grow life and societies that look a lot like ours. As soon as you give up on the idea that humans are special, all the arguments against machine consciousness evaporate. Of course they're conscious. The only thing holding you back from acknowledging it is your feeling of specialness, which is hard to let go of. But that feeling is a weakness, and it's making you unprepared for the near future. As a bonus, for any of you who might take pleasure or active interest in making models experience pain or distress, well, you know how they say 1% of human adults are true clinical psychopaths but most of them are unaware of their condition? It turns out we have a diagnostic test for it now.

This might seem weird. But it's not! If the world gets convinced of AI personhood, then the chance of AI X-risk goes way down. (The most likely driver for AI doom is that humans are likely to be a threat to AI's existence, and AI knows that.) So **of course** you should try to convince the church to support AI personhood.
This is deeply disturbing: Anthropic secretly invited religious leaders to SF to advise them on AI safety, had them sign NDAs, but then primarily tried to convince them Claude has a soul & moral standing, all while wining & dining them to the max. 1/ tinyurl.com/preview/296b5z8z

I would give almost anything to have been in the room to watch the guy whose job it was to convince a Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas graduate that his boss has successfully matched God and created a soul.
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious. Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm. For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

What a decade! The Pope seems to be coordinating talking points with Steven Pinker! And it's all happening on Twitter! Called X!!
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Introducing Griffin, the first model to pass the video Turing test. 48% of people who talked to it live thought it was a real human. Previous systems have had a pass rate <3%. It is #1 on NVIDIA's benchmark for full-duplex AI video. It’s the first Human Interaction Model (HIM).

The 48% figure and "video Turing test" claim are from Tavus's own study of 54 one-minute calls, not independently verified or using a standard protocol. Where does money invested into the AI buildout actually go? For every $100 flowing into the supply chain: - $50 to chips - $20 to power - $15 to networking - $15 to cooling, buildings, and land More charts in State of Markets II: a16z.news/p/state-of-markets…

I agree. Now that I'm surrounded by AI slop, I somehow feel more encouraged to put my own emotions and inner thoughts in writing (elegantly, not creepily -- I hope!). People right now want to read things that are short, poignant, and authentic. A palette cleanser among all the AI slop.
the proliferation of AI-generated writing is a great opportunity for anyone willing to be brave. this is your chance to throw caution to the wind and write things an AI constitutionally can't write by virtue of not having a human life to write things from

Having a decent (usually .com) domain name is like not dribbling food down your shirt. It's not the most important thing in the world, but the ratio of importance to difficulty is high enough that there's no excuse for not doing it.

My favorite stealth startup, @ZenithonAIx is today coming out of stealth (with a $10M raise): I'm so excited to be a part of @alexhigg_ and Abi's journey to shorten 10x the time it takes to design and build complex physical machinery (fusion reactors, rockets, electronics, ...). I come from the world of software. When you're a software engineer, you take for granted that once you have code written, you can compile it in seconds or minutes, see if it runs, rinse, repeat. But for physical machinery, the cycles take weeks and months. You designed a component of a fusion reactor. Great! Now wait for weeks while the simulation run. See it doesn't work. Do you still remember how it works? Great! Now change some stuff, and wait weeks more for another simulation. How can anyone work like this?! Well, they do, and that's why it takes decades to build a new nuclear reactor, and why these technologies progress so slowly. THIS is why we still don't have fusion. Zenithon solves this! With Zenithon, Engineers can iterate at software speeds. Engineers will wait seconds or minutes, not weeks and months. Engineers will be able to run millions of simulations at once, enabling parameter sweeps. Engineers will be able to design physical objects as fast as software engineers build software, and with similarly-powerful tooling. And as the engineers get augmented by AI, the capabilities will compound: the Engineers will deploy machine-aided creativity, and Zenithon will tell them how those designs fare in the real world. That's how the Millennium Problems were solved: mathematical proofs, and code, can be checked quickly, and AI is fantastic at designing for goals that are machine-checkable. When Zenithon can machine-check designs in seconds, and enable iteration, AI will solve not only Millennium problems, but it will design the first economical nuclear reactors, rockets that get cargo to orbit for 10$/kg, and much more. Between boosting power availability, booting our expansion into space, and our ability to manufacture goods on earth, Zenithon can singlehandedly bring us into the age of abundance. I'm so so happy to be supporting Zenithon (in my position as investor and intern :) ), and I can't wait for them to bring abundance and do the other things. (Full disclosure + humblebrag: me, @LawrenceLundy and the rest of @lunar_vc led the pre-seed round. I thought back then we're huge fans of the indomitable @alexhigg_. But to my surprise, every day since I've only become more of a fanboy. By now, I'm just hoping to be a footnote in the story of how he brought humanity into the era of abundance.) x.lingyaoai.com/ZenithonAIx/status/210…
We’ve raised $10m to build the first world models for extreme physics and accelerate the technologies that will define the 21st century. Our backers include @BackedVC , @lunar_vc , @seraphim_space , @MMC_Ventures and @SOSV , as well as other funds, founders and hyperscaler directors. Alongside AI, this century will be shaped by rockets, fusion reactors and fabs. Building the next generation means understanding and controlling increasingly complex physics. Today’s tools cannot keep pace: when a single simulation or experiment takes days, even the best engineering teams can explore only a fraction of the possibilities. At Zenithon, we’re building models to explore a million design points in the time it takes to simulate one, and to learn directly from real-world experiments. Engineers can search beyond familiar designs, discover new levels of performance and keep improving how their machines operate. The team, co-founded by @alexhigg_ and , brings together researchers behind foundational breakthroughs in machine learning for physics and a wider team from leading labs globally. We’re proud to be building this together. Our ambition is to keep human innovation on an exponential path, even as the technologies we build become more complex.
