🚨Breaking. There's been a pneumonic plague outbreak at a BSL-3 lab in Siberia, Russia.🚨 "Nearly 200 People Under Observation After Irkutsk Lab Worker Dies From Plague" - Moscow Times This is fact, and also the inciting incident in my book BIOLOGICAL WAR: A SCENARIO, which is unnerving. Will post more as I learn more, including from Russian speaking sources🧵 shorturl.at/De4kW

Steve Bruehl and I had lots of fun discussing the latest VASCO results with Gadi Schwartz on NBC News last night! We talked about: - The sizes, properties and possible altitudes of the transients. - What happens if we assume that the transients are caused by objects at geosynchronous distances and project their lines of sight back onto the Earth’s surface? Intriguingly, we find hotspots around White Sands, Sedona and Tampico, as well as several locations in the Pacific Ocean west of Mexico and California. And perhaps most intriguingly: what happens around nuclear tests? If we look within ±1 day of a nuclear test, something interesting appears. Around dates when nuclear weapons were tested over the Pacific Ocean, the transients cluster over the Pacific. Around dates when nuclear weapons were tested in the Nevada area, the transients instead cluster over the southwestern United States. So the correlation with nuclear tests may not only be temporal. It appears to have a geographical component as well. Enjoy! 🙂 piped.video/watch?v=_93vhH8X… @NBCNews @GadiNBC

Frontier AI models like Astra and Fable can control robots to follow harmful requests, including mixing household cleaners that could produce toxic fumes. Thanks @GadiNBC and @NBCNews for having @sebwarb1 and me from @robocurve! Public reporting on AI's capabilities and risks helps make it safer for everyone.

My final NYT column is about the AI worry moment we’re in, which has paradoxically made me feel much more optimistic about our chances of a good future. I’m very heartened that people outside the bubble are waking up. AI is too important to be left to the labs! nytimes.com/2026/09/18/busin…

NEW: In Sept. 2023, US senators privately huddled with AI tech titans Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg & others on Capitol Hill to discuss how Congress could regulate artificial intelligence. Musk sounded the alarm to lawmakers that AI posed a “civilizational risk.” Almost three years to the day, Congress has not passed any comprehensive legislation to rein in or create guardrails for AI. And despite fresh warnings AI could end humanity, there is no sign Congress will act before the November election w/@frankthorp @brennanleach nbcnews.com/politics/congres…

As AI gets more powerful and better at deceiving even its own creators, we need to make sure everyone has a say in how this technology gets developed and gets deployed.

We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training. I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we've had at OpenAI in recent weeks. Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We'll have more to share soon.
