Robotaxi operating hours moved from 10pm to 11pm. The main thing we’re trying to solve is making sure that we don’t run over pets when they’re hard to see at night. Literally trying to avoid grey kittens on grey tarmac in the dark.
Robotaxi in Austin now available until 11pm

Visual spectrum cameras can see very well in the dark when AI is doing the photon count analysis

Much appreciated on behalf of felines. However, how does Waymo manage to run 24/7? Is their lidar & camera system more capable?

Why don’t they have infrared sensors?

This is a weakness in the tech thats crazy. So if a human is wearing a grey hoodie, sweatsuit your FSD runs them over?

Night ops to 11pm + hard pet-visibility cases — that's real autonomy work. 夜間營運延至 11 點,還要處理夜間寵物辨識——這才是真實的自動駕駛難題。

Couldn't an infra red sensor give the needed visibility?

It is just a matter of time before Elluswamy and his team solve this. I wonder how Waymo is tackling this particular issue

Those aren’t pets, those are pests. Pets are animals people keep inside like the law says they should. Those are feral strays, or neglected animals, and they are a huge problem in our ecosystems. They hunt and kill local wildlife at prolific rates, hence why it’s illegal to let your cat outside freely. I say run them over, we have a huge problem with too many “pets” in this country. Go to any shelter in the USA and they’ll all say the same thing, they have too many animals and not enough cages, or homes for them. It’s actually cruel to have animals live like that. We should do mass euthanasia, it’s the humane thing to do. It’s not society’s problem that irresponsible morons don’t know to fix their animals or to take responsibility for any offspring their pets have, and care for them themselves.

I wonder if there's some kind of sensor technology you could install in the vehicles that solves this problem as well as many others Like a detection and ranging with light kind thing Someone should figure that out

Wow, this is wonderful! I wonder if robotaxis can have an infrared vision cameras. This way they will sense that there is heat on the road in a form of a cat 🐈‍⬛ or raccoon for example or any creature. Animal’s eyes 👀 also glow in a dark which can be another clue for a robotaxi.

Night is night. I don’t see how 10pm is different from 11pm is different from 3am

These kittens are at greater risk from reckless drivers speeding on country roads than from robotaxis.

a daemon in my brain returned a result of, 'the answer lies in the eyes' - I have interpreted this to mean the reflected light bounce-back from kitten eyes... good luck...

Some shithead with a cybertruck using FSD in my Home Depot parking lot actually went over a little girls dog 2 weeks ago. The only thing that saved the dog was that it fit under the truck. The crowd was ready to lynch the dumbass behind the wheel to be honest.

That is just nature. I wouldn’t make it too sensitive. Pets and squirrels etc get ran over at night. There’s no way to prevent it. You don’t want the taxi stopping abruptly causing whiplash to its occupants.

If cybercab kills one cat you can bet every leftist will be 1,000 times more upset about that than murder of Iryna Zarutska.

I can confirm. I run over my gray kitten in the middle of the night while going to the bathroom practically every night. Do you have any tips for me?
