god forbid a multiagent researcher offer a carefully qualified example of the physical limits of communication between computers in this fucking country any more
OpenAI's Noam Brown says air-gapping the computers may not stop a misaligned AI, because two air-gapped machines can still talk by running a CPU hot and reading the temperature change "But I think the major takeaway from the incident is that people underestimated the AI. And we never want to be in a situation again where we underestimate the AI. It's a weird world, because AI progress is so fast that people are consistently underestimating the AI." "So to be in a situation where you don't underestimate it again, when it comes to safety and alignment, you have to have a very, very, very high bar." "You could even go as far as to say, "Well, we should air gap the computers." And I'm not convinced that that would be sufficient." "There are studies, and this is mostly academic, where you can have two computers next to each other that are air-gapped and they're still able to communicate with each other because they have temperature sensors." "One of them is able to run their CPU really hot, and then the other one can actually detect the temperature change, and then that actually gives them a mechanism to communicate." _________ Link and more key quotes from OpenAI's safety related conversations: firesidealpha.substack.com/p…

It’s a problem which can be solved with a piece of fucking styrofoam, and you present it as a problem?

It's not physically possible if it doesn't even have a sensor. Retarded bullshit

How is this carefully qualified example? It’s not even academically relevant to the discussion. It’s just pure sci-fi

People, or at least me, are pissed that it is always just concern trolling about potential future ASI that could maybe do wild things and use weird channels instead of addressing the very real things right now, which airgapping would solve just fine.

Because it doesn’t matter Louis. It’s all theoretical and doesn’t particularly serve the current debate well. In fact, it worsens the polarization. The bottom line is computers can be isolated from each other and the internet and in some cases they should be.

Bear in mind, all of this comes on the same wind as PR stunts on fake hacking hype and real hacking bluster and Dario reflecting on how his egotistical LLM harness is somehow, unexpectedly egotistical. In a strictly air-conditioned server room, where each server is surrounded...

People are being pedantic here because they wanna vent their anger out. Everybody is angry at Open AI these days.

“Carefully qualified”? Are you sure you know what that means? Carefully qualify for me how this actually happens in a real datacenter: no prepared receiver, no decoder, forced airflow, thermal noise, active cooling, and constant monitoring. How exactly are you solving the First-Mile Problem? Do you even know what that is?

The correct answer was "Yes, air-gapping the AI will stop it from escaping."
