#ChineseCensorship Is Leaking Into Answers From #AmericanAI
What this research documents is something I have experienced firsthand when using AI platforms: the problem is not simply censorship, but a troubling inequality in how AI handles politically sensitive subjects. AI models can sometimes allow strong criticism of leaders in #democraticcountries, while becoming much more cautious or restrictive when the same kind of criticism is directed at leaders of #authoritarian states like #China.
This is particularly evident in #Tibetan issues, where even basic facts can be mishandled. For example, repeatedly misnaming the Tibetan self-immolator #LobgaRangzen as “Rangzen Lobga,” while applying unnecessary restrictions to factual questions about Tibet.
The findings reported by 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 suggests that this is more than isolated model errors. AI companies is making their models more cautious around topics that could put users in authoritarian countries like China at risk, while the enormous volume of #CCP-controlled and state-scripted information online can also influence what these models learn and how they respond to sensitive questions.
𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆: an #AI system SHOULD NOT BECOME less accurate, less open, or less willing to discuss documented facts simply because the subject is politically inconvenient to an authoritarian government.
