If our police officers do not have the confidence to pursue dangerous criminals on our behalf, it is the law-abiding public who will suffer. My question to the Home Secretary this afternoon 👇

I know the new charges made today will be extremely concerning. My profound sympathies are with Nigel Farage and his family. Let no one make any mistake: an attack on anyone in politics is an attack on us all. This case raises serious questions about the security of those in public life. We must use this as an opportunity to reset. Once parliament returns, I will update on our work to strengthen protections for those who choose to serve.

NEW Astonishing growth of Chinese car market share in the UK, revealed in just released SMMT figures, albeit it should not be surprising, as I wrote three years ago. Just under 1 in 4 cars sold in the key month in September are Chinese brands/ built, just under 1 in 5 year to date, with Jaecoo 7 selling nearly 11k, top monthly seller (for second time after March and no 2 Year to date). In a market that is overall up 10% YTD and 12% in September vs last year, Chinese market share is up over 100% to 18%, 319k (YTD) and 24%, 84k (Sept alone). NB - am counting MG, BYD, Denza, Jaecoo, Chery, Omoda, Polestar, Smart, Lepas, Geely, Leapmotor, Changan, Xpeng, Aion, GWM, Skywell, Maxus.

Excl: Labour’s energy policy is “batshit crazy” and the department overseeing net zero is “basically the ministry for P45s”, one of Britain’s most powerful union leaders has said. In an interview with The Times, Gary Smith accused the government of relying on “sticking-plaster politics” while companies struggled with high energy costs and warned that rising energy bills would create a raft of fresh strikes across the public and private sector. On Jackdaw and Rosebank he said: “If they do not do this, it will damage hugely the government’s credibility, and it will massively damage investment because that infrastructure, as I understand it, is ready to go — billions of investment. And if it does not now happen, who in their right mind is going to put money into this country?” thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

Good luck trying to convince the British public that the privatisation of our water, rail and mail were “actually good things”…
😲 Andy Burnham's conference speech is wake up call for the right. Those of us who believe the last four decades haven't been a new dark age need to speak up. Latest @thetimes column on why private enterprise and privatisation are actually good things thetimes.com/comment/columni…

In the summer of 2021, the current Tory shadow chancellor Andrew Griffith called for the Triple Lock to be put to one side because it was delivering what he viewed as an excessive increase in the state pension. And he hoped “that we can build consensus on what should not really be a subject of controversy but a sensible and pragmatic response to post pandemic management of the economy.” Bit Burnhamesque all that conservativehome.com/2021/08…

Lovely to see @michaeljmarra at our fringe meeting - we know he had loads of claims on his time so we're very pleased he was able to come, and to engage with the issues.
Final 6 post 🧵of pics of politician visitors to our #Lab26 fringe meetings & conference stand. We thank @ScottishLabour leader @MichaelMarra, seen here with LWD supporters, for attending our fringe on Sunday - "Material Feminism & the Left: Is Identity Politics Over?" - despite his busy schedule. #LWDLiverpool26 1/

EXCL: The Green party has produced an Orwellian glossary of ‘unacceptable’ language ahead of its conference this weekend. Its new ‘Inclusive Terminology Guidance’ instructs members to stop using words and phrases including ‘elderly’, ‘female politician’ and ‘mothers and fathers’. Also discouraged are ‘able-bodied’, ‘sex-change’, ‘homosexual’, ‘a nutter’, ‘youngster’ and ‘sexual preference’. The guidance recommends replacing ‘gendered job titles’ with ‘gender-neutral terms wherever possible’. Members should say ‘chair’ instead of ‘chairman’, ‘police officer’ instead of ‘policeman’ and ‘parents and carers’ rather than mothers and fathers.

Many Tory MPs I speak to privately acknowledge the triple lock is an unsustainable and ridiculous policy that needs to be binned. I can see why this is an easy battle line to be drawn with the pensioner vote being so lucrative - but it's grim that this is being done at the potential expense of maintaining indefensible intergenerational unfairness

Labour are not cutting pensions, they are reforming the triple lock. Pensions will still rise every year, either at 2.5% or in line with inflation. Whichever is higher. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Property Tax Lab have found 83% of dwellings in England would pay less under a Proportional Property Tax set at 0.48% than they currently pay in Council Tax. This is the change we need to ease the cost-of-living and make tax fairer in England in the Autumn Budget. fairershare.org.uk/independe…

One thing I note here (courtesy of @TheIFS) is that if we had avoided just the increase in spending on Personal Independence Payments for people of working age over this decade there’d be plenty of money to get defence to 3% GDP. That’s a real choice/trade-off.
Yet another difficult budget ahead. Lots of big tax rises already legislated, on top of recent big increases. After big increases over last two years most public service spending due to fall towards end of parliament. What’s a chancellor to do? thetimes.com/article/15014fe…

Brilliant message from @Jonathan_Hinder👇 The Proportional Property Tax will help Londoners as well as the rest of the country. Don't let the misleading headlines skew your thinking. A fairer tax system for all is needed. It's time for change.

Talking free speech at Labour conference this morning 👇
Replying to @savechildrenuk
Monday begins with a look into free speech. ‘Who gets to speak freely?’ is our first panel of the day at 10:30–11:30 in the Derwent Arena Room. What Britons think about free speech, who feels silenced or offended, and where does the public think its limits should lie?
